Kenyan athlete Joseph Kiprono was knocked down by a car on Sunday as he was leading a half-marathon in Colombia.

Kiprono was leading the 21 kilometre race in second-city Medellin when he was knocked down by a car.

Race organisers indicated that he had ‘violated a road closure’ when the incident happened.

The accident occurred 1.5 km prior to the finishing line and David Muindi proceeded to win the race with a time of 1:03:45.

Kiprono, who is a previous winner of the event, was treated by medics on the spot.

He was later taken to hospital with cuts and bruises and later reported by doctors to be in good condition.

Another competitor collapsed and died during the ill-fated half marathon.

The 38-year-old runner fainted during the race with heart problems and was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.
