President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed a former Legal Adviser of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Dr Muiz Banire, as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria.
Buhari also appointed the chairman and 12 commissioners of the Federal Civil Service Commission.
President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, at the plenary on Tuesday, read Buhari’s letters to the legislature in which he sought the approval of the chamber.
Banire, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, had been suspended by the Executive Committee of the APC in the Mushin Local Government Area of Lagos State over alleged anti-party activities. The suspension followed a recommendation by his ward (Ward C, Ilasamaja, Mushin).
The lawyer had dragged the leadership of the APC in Lagos to court over the conduct of party congresses in the state.
Appointed as Chairman-nominee of the FCSC board is Dr Bello Ingawa (Katsina State). The Commissioner-nominees are Moses Ngbale (Adamawa), Waziri Ngurno (Borno), Bello Babura (Jigawa), Ahmed Sama (Kebbi), Iyabode Odulate-Yusuf (Ogun), Shehu Danyaya (Niger), Fatai Olapade (Oyo), Ejoh Chukwuemeka (Anambra), Joe Poroma (Rivers), Ibrahim Mohammed (Kaduna), Aminu Sheidu (Kogi) and Simon Etim (Akwa Ibom).
In a related development, the Senate on Tuesday confirmed the appointment of a former Inspector-General of Police, Musiliu Smith, as Chairman of the Police Service Commission.
Also confirmed were two full-time Commissioners, Justice Clara Bata Ogunbiyi (retd.) (North-East) and AIG Lawal Bawa (retd.) (North-West); and four members, Muhammad Najatu (North-West), Braimoh Adogame Austin (South-South), Rommy Mom (North-Central), and Dr. Nkemka Osimiri Jombo-Ofo (South-East).
Smith, who will represent the South-West on the board of the PSC, will succeed Mike Okiro who is also a former IG.
Saraki had read Buhari’s letter seeking legislative confirmation of the appointments on May 24, 2018.
While congratulating the appointees, Saraki said, “A lot of people are expecting that, with the experience and capacity of the people who are now in the Police Service Commission, it will support the police in carrying out the necessary reforms as required, particularly ensuring that we have a merit-oriented, performance-driven police force that will motivate all men to do the right things in providing security.
“Let me at the same time also urge them to ensure that they look into the area of rewarding performance and being able to compensate those who have worked hard as well as the unfortunate instance where police officers lose their lives during service, to see that adequate compensation is there for their family.”
