Winning the World Cup with France can help Paul Pogba take his Manchester United career to another level, manager Jose Mourinho believes relations between Mourinho and Pogba became so strained last season that the United boss was ready to let United’s £89million record signing leave this summer.

But the Frenchman enjoyed a spectacular World Cup in Russia, crowned by his decisive goal against Croatia in the final in Moscow. Mourinho praised the ‘absolutely brilliant’ Pogba and hopes the player can understand why he was so good in Russia and reproduce the same form for United.

‘To win the World Cup can only be a positive thing,’ said Mourinho. ‘It’s difficult to say that winning the World Cup, it’s not good for a player’s career. I can only imagine it will be positive.

“It’s amazing, it’s fantastic. So many players didn’t have the opportunity to win and help their team enough. For Paul, it’s his first World Cup and to be world champion can only be fantastic.

“I hope he understands why he was very good. That’s the point about his performance level and contribution to a winning team, is to understand why he was so good especially in the second part of the competition, where he was absolutely brilliant. “I did with Paul what I did with my players. I sent a nice message before the World Cup, but during World Cup I decide not to disturb anyone. “They don’t need their club manager to be on their shoulders saying, “yes, no, well done, badly done, happy, not happy”. “They just need to focus on the job, and then after the World Cup I sent a different message to the other guys because he won the competition"
