Senior United players 'angry' with Mourinho's approach

The decision to strip Paul Pogba of captain's privileges on Tuesday is just the latest in a series of incidents that have left senior players at Manchester United "angry and frustrated" with Jose Mourinho and his combative approach, sources told ESPN FC's Mark Ogden.

Another source told ESPN that Mourinho only retains the support of a "handful" of players.

Other sources revealed certain players will reconsider their future at the club if the atmosphere remains the same.

Pogba was held out of Tuesday's League Cup defeat to Derby County hours after Mourinho stripped the Frenchman of the vice-captaincy. Reports suggest the Portuguese manager wanted to assert his authority and put Pogba in his place.

Despite the potential for a dressing-room split, it's believed United chairman Ed Woodward is "100 percent" behind Mourinho. The hope, according to Ogden, is that Mourinho has the skills to "turn the situation around."

The mood appeared to worsen on Wednesday when Sky Sports cameras recorded an uneasy conversation between Mourinho and Pogba. At one point, the manager is heard telling the midfielder to "get out."

Jose Mourinho told he must DROP one star against West Ham

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho must drop Alexis Sanchez - but not for too long.

That is the verdict of Sky Sports pundit and former England striker Darius Vassell.

Alexis Sanchez has struggled in his early days as a Manchester United player since joining from Arsenal in January.

The Chile international has scored just two goals in 17 Premier League appearances in total for the Red Devils.

Sanchez has looked a shadow of the player who netted 80 times in a three-and-a-half-year spell at Arsenal.

He has started four and come on as a substitute in another one of the six Premier League games so far this season.

Vassell reckons it is time Jose Mourinhotook Sanchez out of the limelight, but admits a player earning as much as him cannot be out of the side for long.

“Should he be playing right now for United given the young talent they have there in the squad that aren’t getting the minutes that they possibly deserve?” Vassell said on Sky Sports News.

“To be honest, as a player you never want that (to be taken out of the limelight).

“You can’t ask for that or expect that I don’t believe.

“I think you want to be playing every single football match.

“But on the other hand, I do think it is the right time to maybe sit him out, for him to go through that as a player, to sit down and watch his team, look at it from a different angle, think about his game, think about his performances and almost be taken out of that pressure situation that he’s obviously in.

“I don’t think they can do that for too long wont him, I think he’s cost way too much money to be sitting on the bench.

“I think he needs to be playing the standard of football he is capable of and he needs to be playing week in, week out for Manchester United.

“He’s a player capable of being captain for me when he’s on his day.

“But he’s not reached those heights yet and I do think it’s about time (he was dropped).”

United face West Ham in the Premier League next this Saturday (12.30pm).

Mourinho tells Pogba he won't captain United again

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho informed Paul Pogba and his teammates that the Frenchman won't serve as captain of the club again, sources told ESPN's Rob Dawson.

Mourinho made the move to exert his authority at Old Trafford and remind Pogba of his place in the team, according to The Times' Paul Hirst.

Pogba apparently angered Mourinho when he appeared to call out the manager's conversative approach at Old Trafford.

"We are at home and we should play much better against Wolves. We are here to attack," Pogba said after a 1-1 draw with the newly promoted side. "When we play like (that) it's easier for us."

Pogba captained United on three occasions this season, all when club captain Antonio Valencia was absent.

This is just the latest twist in the standoff between player and manager. Pogba caused controversy earlier in the season when he suggested he'd get fined if he was honest about his situation at the club. That came after Mourinho's veiled comments about Pogba's apparent lack of focus at club level.

Rumors of an exit picked up steam again in September when Pogba refused to commit his immediate future to United.

"Currently, I play there, but who knows what will happen in the next couple of months," he said at the time.

Thibs met with Butler to convince him to rejoin T-Wolves

Tom Thibodeau is putting his best foot forward in an effort to smooth things over with Jimmy Butler.

The Minnesota Timberwolves president and head coach reportedly reached out to the 29-year-old All-Star on Monday with the hope he could convince Butler to rejoin the team during the preseason, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Unfortunately for Thibodeau, Butler was reportedly unwavering in his stance, sources told The Athletic's Jon Krawczynski.

Thibodeau told reporters during Minnesota's media day on Monday that Butler - who was excused from participating - would be back with his teammates in a week's time if a trade had yet to be consummated.

He added the Timberwolves won't be pressured into making a move and they'd only pull the trigger on a trade if it made sense for the franchise.

Butler has already informed the team that he won't take the floor during training camp, according to Krawczynski, which explains why Thibodeau was gunning for a preseason return.

Minnesota's preseason slate kicks off on Saturday at Oracle Arena against the reigning champion Golden State Warriors.

FIFPro World XI: French trio named alongside Messi, Ronaldo

Aside from major team and individual trophies, top players are looking for recognition from their peers.

To that end, FIFA named its World XI during Monday's annual Best FIFA Awards ceremony in London, England. The FIFPro XI is voted upon by a total of 25,000 footballers spanning 65 countries worldwide and hails the form and achievements of the game's best over the last calendar year.

Football's superstar duopoly of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were each selected for a joint-record 12th time, while three members of France's World Cup-winning team were included. There was, however, no room for Liverpool's Puskas Award winnerand Best Player nominee Mo Salah, or Premier League runaway winner Manchester City's crown jewel Kevin De Bruyne.

Kylian Mbappe is the first teenager ever to be named in the FIFPro World XI after the phenom's remarkable 2018, while Les Bleus teammates N'Golo Kante and Raphael Varanewere also elected.

World Cup 2018 Golden Ball and FIFA Best Player winner Luka Modric was named in midfield alongside Chelsea pair Kante and Eden Hazard, while David De Gea was voted in as goalkeeper despite Thibaut Courtoishaving been named Best Goalkeeper earlier in the ceremony.

The French trio, Hazard, and De Gea have all been named to the XI for the first time. Sergio Ramos makes his ninth appearance, good for joint-third all time, and he, Dani AlvesMarcelo, Modric, Messi, and Ronaldo have now all been named in the last four iterations. This, however, is the first since the award's inception in 2005 that only one Barcelonaplayer has been included.

The FIFPro World XI in full:

GK: David De Gea (Manchester United and Spain)

DF: Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid and Spain), Marcelo (Real Madrid and Brazil), Raphael Varane (Real Madrid and France), Dani Alves (Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil)

MF: N'Golo Kante (Chelsea and France), Eden Hazard (Chelsea and Belgium), Luka Modric (Real Madrid and Croatia)

FW: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid/Juventusand Portugal), Lionel Messi (Barcelona and Argentina), Kylian Mbappe (PSG and France)

6 biggest snubs from the FIFPro World XI

The latest FIFPro World XI was revealed at The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony in London on Monday and, as usual, it drew anger from many wanting to see their favorite players among a lineup of the globe's greatest.

Here, theScore picks out the most glaring omissions from the XI as voted for by 25,000 professional footballers.

Thibaut Courtois

JAVIER SORIANO / AFP / Getty

This one is pretty simple: How can Manchester United's David De Gea be named between the sticks for the FIFPro World XI, but not be deemed The Best FIFA Goalkeeper?

That distinction was reserved for Courtois, who spared further blushes for Chelseaduring a limp defense of their Premier League title in 2017-18, and was then elastic for Belgium en route to a third-place finish at the World Cup. He made more saves (27) than any other goalkeeper at the tournament - De Gea made only one stop in four appearances for Spain.

He is now donning the gloves for Real Madridafter grabbing two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and League Cup while at Chelsea.

Harry Kane

IAN KINGTON / AFP / Getty

By Kane's standards, he was shot-shy at the World Cup; Aleksandar Mitrovic and Toni Kroos fired more efforts at the onion bag despite bowing out at the group stage. Still, the Tottenham Hotspur idol eased to the Golden Boot with six goals in six appearances, three of which were penalties.

With Monday's individual awards weighing so heavily on World Cup showings, it will be a surprise to some that he's omitted from the world's best starting lineup.

And that's without taking his Spurs feats into consideration. Although he was outmuscled by Mohamed Salah for the Premier League top-scorer honor, he struck 30 goals in 37 outings in the top flight and helped shrug off Tottenham's struggles on the continent with seven tallies in seven matches.

Toni Kroos

Juan Manuel Serrano Arce / Getty Images Sport / Getty

If one German should be spared blame for the country's disastrous group-stage exit at the World Cup, it is Kroos.

The midfielder's passing accuracy stood at 93.1 percent when he left after three matches, and he fired an absurd, curling free-kick past helpless Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olsen in the dying seconds of their vital meeting. Eventually, it counted for naught, but it appeared Kroos had breathed life into Germany's defense of its World Cup title.

His understated class alongside The Best FIFA Men's Player, Luka Modric, for Real Madrid is a joy and arguably just as crucial. No La Liga regular completed more passes per 90 minutes (82.1) than the Bayern Munichproduct last season, and he bested all of his teammates for total key passes (64). He was similarly influential on continental duty, putting in pragmatic displays that toughened the foundation for another Champions League triumph.

Kevin De Bruyne

Michael Regan / Getty Images Sport / Getty

As Pep Guardiola would attest, Manchester City's record-breaking Premier League title win was a team effort. However, if one player had to be singled out as the most instrumental member of the collective, De Bruyne would get the most recognition.

He led England's first tier in assists (16) and key passes (106), completed just one fewer take-on than roaming teammate Raheem Sterling (64), and obsessively found space in his manager's schematic to pot and skim deliveries across the park with aplomb. His work ethic and willingness to stick his foot in has also won admirers.

Then he went to the World Cup, blasting an unstoppable hit against Brazil in the quarterfinals and counting two assists overall. Eden Hazard took the majority of the plaudits for Belgium's run to the semifinals, but De Bruyne's achievements over the much-longer domestic term must outstrip those of his compatriot.

Thomas Meunier

PAUL ELLIS / AFP / Getty

Right-backs Dani Carvajal and Kyle Walkerwere actually named in the second team behind the FIFPro World XI. There are legitimate arguments for that pair to be in the main squad. Joshua Kimmich was then in the third team, Kieran Trippier in the fourth lineup, and Sime Vrsaljko in the fifth.

But what about Meunier?

The Belgian was another standout for his nation at the World Cup, has a knack for scoring outstanding goals, and, most tellingly for Monday's best XI vote, was much, much better than Dani Alves over the 2017-18 campaign for Paris Saint-Germain. Maybe it was sheer habit for Alves to get a nod for the FIFPro World XI by his contemporaries, but Meunier, along with plenty of other right-backs employed in Europe, has a right to feel aggrieved.

Mohamed Salah

Alex Livesey / Getty Images Sport / Getty

The records stacked up for Salah in his debut season for Liverpool, the most celebrated of which was his 32 goals in a 38-match Premier League campaign. He stands alone with that number, despite arriving on Merseyside with an adequate 15 Serie A goals in the prior term for Roma, where he was mainly tasked with teeing up Edin Dzeko.

He's not even a striker. He also made a number of assists across the domestic and continental game. He previously flopped under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea. The script was written for him to lead Liverpool to glory in the Champions League final, but his start was cruelly cut short when he was involved in a coming together with Sergio Ramos. The Real Madrid defender will never be brought a pint in the extensive red pockets of Merseyside.

Salah was clearly nursing his injury from that tangle with Ramos at the World Cup, contributing to a disappointing group-stage elimination for Egypt. After sitting out the first match, Salah was able to register on the scoresheet against both Russia and Saudi Arabia. Little victories.

Spanish players union veto La Liga match in Miami

Madrid - The Spanish players union (AFE) on Monday rejected plans by La Liga to stage a regular-season game in the United States, following a similar refusal by the Spanish football federation (RFEF).

An AFE statement said La Liga had not responded to questions about the planned game between Girona and Barcelona in Miami. It said that "faced with a lack of information" it opposed the game taking place.

On Friday, the RFEF expressed its formal opposition to moving the game from Girona to the United States.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has also expressed doubts about the move.

The sharp refusal by the AFE, which had already indicated concern over the health risks to players of such a trip, is a new blow for La Liga, which argues that the initiative will expand its international audience.

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez said Sunday his club would refuse to play a Spanish League game in the United States.

For their part, Barcelona and Girona have said they are in favour of the idea of playing in Miami on January 26.

Modric threatens to break Ronaldo-Messi axis at FIFA awards

London - Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi's decade-long domination of football's individual awards is under threat from Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric and Liverpool's Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah when FIFA's player of the year is announced on Monday.

For the first time in 12 years, Messi is not even nominated among the three finalists for the award after early exits for Argentina at the World Cup and Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Both Messi and Ronaldo have won FIFA's award in different guises five times each, and the Portuguese can move out on his own after winning a third straight Champions League title with Real Madrid before heading for pastures new with Juventus in July.

For a sixth straight season, Ronaldo was the Champions League's top scorer with 15 goals and also scored four times at the World Cup, including a hat-trick against Spain in a thrilling 3-3 draw to open Portugal's campaign.

However, Portugal's last-16 exit to Uruguay in Russia and Ronaldo's failure to score in the semi-finals or final of the Champions League has opened the door for Modric.

'The year of Luka'

Croatia's captain was an inspirational figure as they surpassed all expectations to reach the World Cup final and also played a big role in Madrid's Champions League and Club World Cup wins.

"I hope that Luka will be the best player in the world," Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic told AFP.

"He deserves it because he was the best player in the Club World Cup and the best player in the World Cup.

"Messi and Ronaldo are fantastic players, but this year is the year of Luka."

Salah also makes the podium for the first time after an incredible 44-goal debut season for Liverpool that carried the Reds to the Champions League final.

However, a shoulder injury suffered early on in the final robbed him of the chance to help Liverpool lift the trophy and also meant he wasn't in peak condition to lead Egypt's World Cup bid.

Despite scoring in each of his two appearances in Russia, The Pharaohs bowed out at the group stage with three defeats.

France's World Cup-winning coach Didier Deschamps is favourite to win the best coach award ahead of Dalic and former Real coach Zinedine Zidane, who stepped down in June after overseeing three Champions League triumphs in just two and a half years in charge.

Even if they lose out on the best player award, Messi and Ronaldo could walk away with a prize as they are both nominated for the Puskas award for best goal.

Messi's solitary World Cup goal against Nigeria and Ronaldo's spectacular overhead kick against his future employers in the Champions League quarter-finals are two of 10 goals on the shortlist, also including Gareth Bale's acrobatic strike for Real in the Champions League final.

The best goalkeeper prize is to be contested by France captain Hugo Lloris, Denmark's Kasper Schmeichel and Belgium's Thibaut Courtois, whose World Cup heroics earned him a move to Madrid from Chelsea.

Lyon's Norwegian striker Ada Hegerberg and German midfielder Dzsenifer Marozsan are joined by Brazilian five-time winner Marta of Orlando Pride in the running for the best women's player after winning the Champions League with the French giants.

Reynold Pedros of Lyon, Japan boss Asako Takakura and Netherlands coach Sarina Wiegman are in the running for best women's coach.

- Wine had been traveling with spy chief Pamela Komuntale who was dressed in civilian

- Komuntale accompanied Wine throughout his journey from US

- Wine passed through Nairobi's JKIAbefore proceeding to Entebbe in Uganda

- The Opposition leader arrived at Entebbe airport and was arrested shortly after landing

- Tight security was maintained in Kampala town and Wine's home village

- Uganda government warned anybody participating in the procession could be arrested

- The politician was flown to US for medical attention after he was allegedly tortured by the police

- The MP was accused alongside other people of stoning Museveni's motorcade

New details have emerged indicating the embattled Uganda MP for Kyadondo East Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine was secretly escorted by a counter-terrorism officer from United States.

Wine, who has since been arrested and taken to unidentified location, was escorted by spy chief Pamela Komuntale.

Komuntale smartly dressed in civilian was spotted paying a keen eye on the ongoing of the MP throughout his journey from US.

Wine landed in Entebbe airport in Uganda two hours after he left Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi.

Amid tight security in Kampala City, the musician turned politician was arrested and taken to a unidentified location by Uganda police.

Yoweri Museveni's government had on Wednesday, September 19, announced it would arrest members of the public save for the immediate relatives, who would dare turn out to receive the Kyadondo East MP at the airport.

In a new turn of events and despite the assurance, the police arrested the legislator's elder brother Eddie Yawe while on his way to the airport.

Pressure from the international community has been mounting on Museveni's administration for violating Wine's rights, but the government has remained defiant.

The Ugandan government also banned media houses from airing live coverage of the homecoming, though a spot check by TUKO.co.ke, showed NTV Uganda was covering it.

Valverde yet to decide on Barcelona future

Barcelona - Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde has admitted he is not sure if he will still be manager of the club next season.

Valverde's contract expires at the end of the current campaign and he confirmed on Saturday he has an option to extend the deal by another year.

"I have a contract and I have a possibility to extend it a year more," Valerde said.

"The contract is there but we know what can happen in a season and the season is long. You have to see how the team does.

"Everything seems good but we are still in the month of September and we have a lot ahead."

Coaches like Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique have left Barca in recent years after citing the fatigue involved in managing at the Camp Nou.

"I don't know about exhaustion or anything like that," Valverde said. "We are still in September, there is plenty of room to feel exhausted, it is only just beginning."

Barcelona won La Liga and the Copa del Rey last season in Valverde's first year at the club.

After their shock Champions League exit to Roma in the quarter-finals, however, reports suggested his future was in doubt.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu has said the club will want to know Valverde's position by March.

"I do not remember the deadline but the ideal date to know the future would be about the month of March," Bartomeu told Spanish radio station Onda Cero last week.

"I would like him to continue because we are happy with his work. Just look back at the results and performances of last year."

Ronaldo's sister Aveiro blasts referee Felix Brych over his brother's unfair red card

- Portugal international Ronaldo was sent off in Juve's 2-0 win over Valencia

- Pjanic's double handed the Italian League champions a winning start in Europe

- The former Real Madrid earned his first red card in the history of the European competition

- Ronaldo's elder sister Aveiro has however lashed out at the referee describing the act as shameful

Cristiano Ronaldo's elder sister Katia Aveiro trained her guns at German referee Felix Brych after issuing a straight red card to her brother in their Champions League encounter.

Juventus went on to secure a win against Valencia despite being down to 10 men at the Estadio Mestalla on Wednesday, September 19.

The 33-year-old was handed his marching orders in the 30th minute for an off-the-ball incident with Jeison Murillo and his 41-year-old sister has described the sending off as 'shameful'.

However, his Italian League outfit still went ahead to win the clash with Miralem Pjanic scoring twice from the spot.

Daniel Parejo had a chance to reduce Valencia's deficit in the 90th minute but his penalty kick was saved by Wojciech Szczesny.

Shame on football... justice will be done... [you] want to destroy my brother but God never sleeps... Shameful #respectfootball," Aveiro said while reacting to the incident on her Instagram handle.

The former Real Madrid star got red-carded for the first time in his 15-year Champions League-playing career, and he thought the decision was harsh.

He finished as the highest goal scorer in the last three editions - bringing his UCL goal tally to 120 in the competition.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner and former Manchester United ace could miss a second emotional return to Old Trafford.

TUKO.co.ke previously reported that Juventus kicked off their UEFA Champions League campaign on a winning note following their 2-0 victory over Valentia at the Estadio Mestalla.

Miralem Pjanic opened scoring for the visitors through the spot kick in the 45th minute after Daniel Parejo conceded a penalty for dangerous play against Joao Cancelo.

Emre Can on Cristiano Ronaldo's red card: "That’s supposed to be a red!? I just heard that he said it was because of hair pulling. We’re not women, we’re playing football. One hundred per cent, that is not a red card."

Barely six minutes after the resumption of the second half, Pjanic doubled his side via penalty after Jeison Murillo was booked for pushing Leonardo Bonucci in the danger zone.

Deontay Wilder v Tyson Fury: Fight confirmed for 1 December

Fury (left) and Wilder are both unbeaten in their professional careers

The fight between WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury will take place on Saturday, 1 December.

Contracts have been signed with the venue for the bout, expected to be in the United States, announced next week.

American Wilder, 32, and Briton Fury, 30, agreed a fight in August.

"The two best heavyweights competing against each other, the best fighting the best, giving the people what they want," Wilder said on social media.

The promotional tour for the fight will start on 1 October in London and will continue to New York and Los Angeles.

In August, former world champion Fury registered a unanimous points victory over Francesco Pianeta in his second fight since returning from a two-and-a-half-year spell out of the sport.

"I know you have got a big punch, I know you are unbeaten, I know you have got a big mouth, and I know you want to win, but you don't want it like I do," Fury said in a video addressing Wilder on social media.

"You can't beat me, I will out heart you, I will force my will upon you until you quit and that is a promise. This chin is going nowhere, this chin will absorb all your power and I'll detonate."

Wilder has held the WBC title since January 2015. Neither man has been beaten, with Fury boasting a 27-fight winning streak and Wilder producing 39 knockouts from 40 professional wins.

"I just beat, in my opinion, one of the best heavyweights in Luis Ortiz and now I am going for the next best in the heavyweight division," added Wilder.

On Saturday, Fury's fellow Briton Anthony Joshua takes on Alexander Povetkin in a defence of his WBA, IBF and WBO world heavyweight titles at Wembley.

Chelsea hit by VERY bad news ahead of West Ham - Maurizio Sarri WON’T be happy

CHELSEA have suffered an unexpected blow ahead of Sunday’s London derby against West Ham United after their flight back from Greece was postponed.

(Image: GETTY)

Maurizio Sarri's side had planned to fly out straight after Thursday's 1-0 win at PAOK in the Europa League.

But bad weather in the UK meant Chelsea were forced to postpone their return flight until this morning.

Chelsea - who have won all five of their Premier League matches so far this season - are now scheduled to land late this afternoon.

And boss Sarri will be further infuriated at the delay having been already been frustrated at the proximity of the Hammers’ clash, before the flight delay emerged.

"We have to play again in 63 hours, on Sunday morning," Sarri said after the 1-0 win in Thessaloniki.

Eden Hazard and David Luiz are unaffected by the delay as they were rested for the Europa League trip, with Sarri making five changes in total for the Group L clash.

Sunday’s match against West Ham continues Chelsea’s jam-packed start to the season, with a Carabao Cup clash against Liverpool on Wednesday before the two teams meet again at Stamford Bridge on September 29.

Pedro could be rested for the West Ham game after he suffered a shoulder injury in stoppage time in Thessaloniki.

However, the Spain winger tweeted to say "everything's ok despite the incident at the end of the game".

The news of Chelsea’s delay will come as a boost to West Ham, whose confidence will have been boosted following a first win of the season at Everton last weekend.

The Hammers won 3-1 at Goodison Park following a sequence of four consecutive defeats at the start of the campaign.

And West Ham defender Pablo Zabaleta says Chelsea will not have it all their own way in east London.

"Chelsea have a lot of quality but if we play with the same intensity and concentration as we did against Everton, then who knows? Anything can happen, especially at home," he said.

"Against Everton, we needed to react. We did and we proved to ourselves we have a chance to win games if we play this way."

The Hammers enjoyed a good campaign against Chelsea last season, securing a 1-0 victory at the London Stadium and claiming a point in a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture.
