Nigeria’s Flying Eagles kicked off their 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign in style following an emphatic 4-0 win over Qatar. Goals from Maxwell Effiom, Okechukwu Offia, Tom Dele-Bashiru and Aliu Salawudeen ensured Paul Aigbogun’s side kick-start the tournament with three points and top of Group D.
Nigeria had on previous occasions in 1989 in Saudi Arabia and 2005 on home soil gotten to the finals of the U-20 tournament but failed to win it on both occasions.
Aigbogun started notable names like Manchester City’s Tom Dele-Bashiru, a member the new wave. Currently on City’s books, the promising midfielder looked to lend even more weight to Nigeria’s credentials. Also Enyimba’s trio of Ikouwen Utin, Valentine Ozornwafor and Maxwell Effiom.

Qatar looked to have a bright start to the game with an earlier freekick hit on target but that wouldn’t stop the Flying Eagles from taking the lead in as early as the 11th minute of the encounter at Tychy.
Enyimba left back Ikouwem Utin received the ball at the edge of the box, drifted his way past the Qatari defense and then assisted his fellow Enyimba man Maxwell Effiom at the near post who in turn found the back of the net for the game’s opener.
Qatar tried to claw their way back into the game but Utin proved to tough to handle as again made a solo run into Qatar’s box and this time laid it on a silver platter for Henry Offia who taped home with ease.
While Aigbogun’s lads tried to take the game further away from Bruno Miguel’s side, the Qataris had a good opportunity in the dying minutes of the first half but a fabulous defending by Rabiu ensured Hashim Alli’s attempt would be of no sort of worry heading into the second half.
Second half started brightly for Nigeria as Henry Offia got a good opportunity to make it three for Nigeria but the forward’s shot got parried away by Shehab Ellethy. But the third of the game wouldn’t be far away.

Tom Dele-Bashiru stylishly made it three for Nigeria in the 68th minute. Unmarked on the edge of the 18-yard box, the Manchester City midfielder used the inside of his foot to slot home the ball with ease.

Aliu Salawudeen shortly after, poked home the ball from close range to put the Flying Eagles in cruise control and four goals ahead.
The other Group D game would be between Ukraine’s U-20 and USA’s U-20 later in the day at the Stadion Miejejski in Bielsko-Biala. Aigbogun’s boys would now look forward to their second game against the USA on Monday and also pull off an emphatic win so as to secure their place in the next round of the competition.
