Messi Shutdown And Make Liverpool Walk Alone

Football News

It’s advantage Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals after they secured a 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Camp Nou on Wednesday night.

A Lionel Messi brace - including one of his greatest ever free-kicks - and an earlier Luis Suarez goal sealed the victory for the hosts.

Liverpool had chances to equalise and went close on numerous occasions but were kept at bay by the impressive Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The Reds found themselves up against two of their ex-players in Philippe Coutinho and Suarez, but only one of them managed to make an impact against their former club.

Suarez insisted he would celebrate if he scored and the Uruguayan forward stayed true to his word, producing a knee-slide celebration after turning home Jordi Alba’s fabulous pass.

Remarkably, this was Suarez’s first Champions League goal of the season.

Barça had already gone close to scoring through Lionel Messi, who produced a couple of magical moments over the course of the 90 minutes, but the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was denied in the 12th minute by Andy Robertson’s superb last-ditch block.

Liverpool had a decent opportunity to equalise 10 minutes before half-time through Sadio Mane, but the Senegalese forward was unable to keep his composure at the critical moment, skying the ball high over the bar after timing his run to perfection.

Jurgen Klopp’s men created more chances to score a precious away goal after the break but were denied on three occasions by the world-class Ter Stegen at the start of the second half.

The German goalkeeper saved pulled off two important saves from James Milner and another from Mohamed Salah.

His second save from Milner came after a brilliant Liverpool move, who were pushing hard in search of the equaliser.

Coutinho, meanwhile, went off on the hour-mark to jeers from his own frustrated supporters.

This was yet another disappointing night from the Brazilian, who was idolised at Anfield but has flattered to deceive at Camp Nou.

It will be fascinating to see whether Ernesto Valverde starts Coutinho at Anfield next week.

Liverpool know they must win at least 3-0 next Tuesday to stand any chance of reaching the final after Messi finished the Reds off in style.

First he walked the ball into the net, to make it 2-0…
