Zimbabwe Opposition leader rejects election results as country plunges into political tension

Hours after Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) declared President Emmerson Mnangangwa winner of the presidential election, Zimbabwe's opposition leader has come out to dismiss the results.

Nelson Chamisa of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Alliance on Friday, August 3, dismissed what he called the "unverified fake results" of the election.

Taking to twitter to express his disappointment, Chamisa accused the country's electoral body of announcing fake and unverified results.

"The ZEC scandal of releasing unverified fake results is regrettable," Chamisa wrote.

He further accused the body of denying his election agents access to the results before the announcement that Mnangagwa had won by the narrowest margin of 50.8%.

"ZEC denied our election agent access to results before announcement. ZEC must release proper and verified results endorsed by parties," Chamisa added.

Chamisa's MDC Alliance had vowed to launch a legal challenge, saying the vote was rigged.

"The level of opaqueness, truth deficiency, moral decay and values deficit is baffling," noted Chamisa.

Chamisa's remark comes after Morgan Komichi, MDC Alliance chairperson, described the results as bogus claiming the figures had been inflated.

"We were not given time to verify the results. This result that you are hearing has not been verified. These are bogus figures. They are bogus results, and we believe that a lot of the figures have been inflated," he said.

Prior reports by TUKO.co.ke indicated Paul Mangwana, spokesperson for ZANU-PF, the opposition could face them in court if they claimed the results were a fraud.

Mnangagwa, a former ally of Robert Mugabe who replaced him in November 2017 after a brief military intervention, has hailed his victory as a new beginning for Zimbabwe.
