Manchester United bounced back from last weekend’s defeat to beat Bournemouth 2-0 in a rescheduled Premier League at the Vitality Stadium on Wednesday night.
Chris Smalling gave the Red Devils a first half lead, before Romelu Lukaku’s stunning stike in the second half sealed the scoreline and guaranteed three points to United.
Following the shock 1-0 defeat to West Brom at the weekend which handed the title to Manchester City, United knew they had no other option than to win this game as they seek to secure second position on the table.
But the start of the game was anything but straightforward for them, as they struggled to knit any kind of rhythm together. It appeared to be some kind of déjà vu, a similar performance to the one at the weekend against West Brom.
While Bournemouth also hardly created any real chances within that same period, they showed more intensity and it looked like they would be the ones who would find the back of the net first.
However, that didn’t prove to be the case as in the 28th minute, Jesse Lingard put the ball on a plate for Smalling, who scored with a simple close-range finish. This was the Red Devils’ first real chance and it found its way into the back of the net.
The first half would end without any more real adventure from both sides, as United appeared comfortable in trying to work the ball around their opponents.
The start of the second half wasn’t any different from the first, as both sides failed to impose themselves on the game, and once again, Jose Mourinho’s men looking bereft of ideas.
But there would be a highlight in the 70th minute as Lukaku collected a sweet pass and lashed the ball under the crossbar. What a strike as United increased their lead.
Truth is, without the goals, it was a pretty drab game with very few chances but United would be glad to take all three points.
