Confirmed: Sevilla sack Montella, appoint interim manager

Sevilla have confirmed the dismissal of coach Vincenzo Montella and have replaced him with former boss Joaquin Caparros until the end of the season.

Sevilla in a statement on its official website confirms Montella has been fired after nine games without a win and ‘only’ 19 points from 16 matches in La Liga, with Friday’s 2-1 defeat to Levante the final straw.

"Sevilla FC have dismissed Vincenzo Montella, after the poor performance dynamics that the team has accumulated since their last win at Old Trafford on 13 March.

"Since then, the Nervion team has nine games without winning, with five defeats, the last one being won this Friday at the Ciutat de Valencia.

"The club makes the decision after the poor run of results that drag the team, who has not won since last March 13, accumulating nine games without winning."

The statement also explains Sevilla have been in talks with the 62-year-old for ‘several months’ and will be given a new role once the club overhaul their management structure.

"The Sevilla FC and Joaquín Caparrós have reached an agreement for the technical utrerano direct nervionense the first team in the final stretch of the season , once confirmed the dismissal of Vincenzo Montella .

"The Utrera will close his journey as a coach in the current campaign and from then on will be linked to the club in the facet that will be determined later, once the organigram of the club's sports structure is reorganized.

"In fact, the incorporation of Caparrós to the club was already under study for months and even conversations had been established. Before the call of the club and President José Castro, the experienced Utrera coach has not hesitated to accept the proposal to lead the first team in search of the goal of getting a place for the UEFA Europa League in the remaining four games." the statement continued

Montella only replaced Eduardo Berizzo in December and guided Los Nervionenses to the Copa del Rey Final and the Champions League quarter-finals at the expense of Manchester United.

However, he could not prevent a 5-0 hammering by Barcelona in the Copa Final, while Sevilla have

not won a single match since eliminating United on March 13.

Montella’s successor is Caparros, who coached the Andalusians between 2000-2005, taking them into the top flight, before laying the foundations for their Europa League triumphs in each of the following two seasons.
