England clash a ‘World Cup game’ for Nigeria — Rohr

Super Eagles Technical Adviser, Genort Rohr.

Gernot Rohr is taking the friendly against England, scheduled for Wembley Stadium on June 2 just, as he would a World Cup encounter, as revealed by the 64-year-old at the pre-match press conference on Friday.

Answering a question on what the game plan would be against the Three Lions, Rohr answered: “We have about the youngest squad in the World cup and I heard the coach of England [with a young team] team say he wants to win the World Cup in 2022 – we can say the same.

“It is a real test. The last match [against Congo DR] – we didn’t play with our best team. Tomorrow [Saturday] we will try to play with our best team.

“And there will be one player who is not in the team because of injury but we will try to see tomorrow who gets the chance to start against Croatia – so for us it is a most important game, even more important than the Czechoslovakia, which we will play next week…this is a World Cup match for us.

“Full house, good atmosphere – this is a real test. For us, it is a very important game,” Rohr said.

Nigeria has played England twice in the past – a friendly 1-0 loss at Wembley in November 1994 and a 0-0 result at the 2002 World Cup.

Rohr added that the Eagles are not yet ready for the June 16 kickoff against Croatia.

“We have only worked together for one day because we just have all our players together.”

Victor Moses did not join the team in Nigeria but waited over in London while Wilfred Ndidi continues his rehabilitation from injury.

”But we still have two weeks,” Rohr said.

The Eagles open their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 16, followed by Iceland on June 22 with their last group game against Argentina scheduled for June 26.
