Australia 1-1 Denmark
Christian Eriksen’s goal after 7 minutes is the earliest World Cup goal Denmark have scored since Martin Jorgensen’s against Brazil in the 1998 tournament (second minute). That strike means Eriksen has had a hand in 18 goals in his last 15 appearances for Denmark (13 goals, 5 assists). He is undoubtedly the star of this side.
Jedinak ignores Schmeichel’s attempt to put him off, sending him the wrong way and slotting home calmly to equalise! Australia are back in it. He scored against France and Jedinak scores another penalty as Kasper Schmeichel finally concedes a goal. Schmeichel dives the wrong way as Jedinak rolls it into the bottom right corner. And we’re level at 1-1.
Arzani dances inside from the left and feeds Mooy, who opens his body up and lashes an effort towards the top corner, but it flies narrowly over the bar! Great strike from the midfielder!
France 1-0 Peru
Kylian Mbappe’s first-half strike helped France overcome – and eliminate – a resilient Peru to earn a spot in the knockout round of the World Cup. Ricardo Gareca’s side, buoyed on by their passionate support inside the Ekaterinburg Arena, came alive in the second half after falling behind in the 34th minute but ultimately could not find the equaliser that would have prevented their exit.
Mbappe opened the scoring in the 35 minute when he tapped in a deflected attempt from Olivier Giroud. France almost grabbed the opener from Antoinne Griezmann but his shot was blocked. It has been a balanced affair at Ekaterinburg, with Peru dominating possession but failing to convert their chances. Peru made a double substitution on resumption, bringing in speedster Jefferson Farfan and Anderson Santamaria for Yoshimar Yotun and A-Rod Alberto Rodriguez to bolster the attacking unit.
But it was Peru who had the upper hand after the break. Midfielder Pedro Aquino went closest to levelling when his stunning strike cannoned off the bar. France’s defence remained resolute to the final whistle, although they have yet to convince fully that they are one of the favourites for title.
Argentina 0-3 Croatia
A mediocre performance by Lionel Messi and his Argentina team-mates on Monday at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium ensured that Croatia retained their place at the summit of Group D following a 2-0 win over the South Americans in their second Group D game of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Lionel Messi drew blanks for the second game running and was unable to lift his side as they crumbled to a Luka Modric-inspired Croatia.
Captain Luka Modric fired in an absolute stunner after goalkeeper Willy Caballero fumbled a routine pass for Croatia’s opener. Ivan Rakitic got a third to make sure the star-studded Argentina side failed to avoid a 44-year old World Cup record, and that the European side win back-to-back World Cup games for the first time since 1998. The last time Argentina failed to win either of their first two World Cup games was in 1974. Croatia is already through to the round of 16 in Russia with a game against Iceland to spare.
