Jorginho
Manchester City’s sheer dominance in the Premier League led to a record-breaking title triumph and the investment they made in the transfer market transformed the league into a one-horse race.
The Cityzens, however, had a disappointing Champions League run where they were knocked out from the quarterfinals following defeats against Liverpool in both the legs but Pep Guardiola would be determined to achieve elite European glory next season by splashing the cash once more.
They have reportedly turned their attention on Italy international Jorginho. Napoli are asking for £61m for the Serie A sensation. The 26-year-old midfielder joined from Hellas Verona back in January 2014 but has emerged as one of their top performers throughout the course of his successful stint.
He still has a couple of years left on his current deal at Napoli, thus, enabling the Serie A runners-up to hold a strong stance regarding the transfer fee.
Joao Santos, the player’s agent, has opened up about the ongoing talks and fueled the speculations in his latest interview.
“Jorginho is still under contract but if Napoli finds an agreement with City, the player will go to Manchester. Finding an agreement with the English club will not be a problem considering the importance of the team.”
The star-studded Manchester City team already has Fernandinho in a similar midfield role but the 33-year-old Brazilian needs a long-term successor who builds the game from deeper areas.
Jorginho is a proper No.6 with a strong vision, ball-holding traits, passing attributes along with box-to-box movement which is crucial in Guardiola’s game-plan.
Manchester City, however, lost only six games all season but remained inferior to Liverpool who defeated them thrice in all competitions. The counter-pressing of Klopp’s men exposed Fernandinho on repeated occasions, forcing him to make costly errors.
Jorginho, therefore, will slot straight in the holding role and the presence of Kevin De Bruyne as well as David Silva up front will make the mighty Sky Blues a formidable force furthermore.
They already have enough cover in every position despite the departure of veteran Yaya Toure. The financial supremacy is allowing them to reinvest in their squad time and again as they are likely to spend even more in the next three months.
Shakhtar Donetsk’s midfield star Fred has also been linked to a move to the Etihad but the profile of Jorginho is too hard to ignore and the Italian could play a major role in City’s midfield next season.
This is how the Premier League champions will line up with Jorginho in a three-man midfield.
