Chelsea announced Thursday that plans for a new stadium project have been put on hold due to the "current unfavourable investment climate."
In December 2015, the club announced that capacity at Stamford Bridge would be increased from 41,600 to 60,000 through a redevelopment.
Since then, the estimated cost of the project has increased to £1 billion following delays and a dispute with a local family, according to BBC Sport.
News of the stadium project's shelving follows Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich's difficulties in obtaining a new United Kingdom visa. The Russian billionaire has become an Israeli citizen and is allowed to visit the U.K., but the 51-year-old is prohibited from working in the country, according to the Guardian's Peter Walker.
A brief statement on Chelsea's website read: "Chelsea Football Club announces today that it has put its new stadium project on hold. No further pre-construction design and planning work will occur.
"The club does not have a time frame set for reconsideration of its decision. The decision was made due to the current unfavourable investment climate."
The new stadium project was expected to be completed ahead of the 2021-22 campaign
