Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Allie Kabba, has requested Nigeria’s assistance in energy, education and health sectors.

Mr Kabba, who made the call on Wednesday in Abuja when he visited his Nigerian counterpart, Geoffrey Onyeama, also requested Nigeria’s help for his country’s energy sector.

He said that the new government in Sierra Leone was voted on the basis of its manifesto and was committed to providing disciplined leadership.

He explained that the provision of quality education was the flagship of the government’s programme and said the government would not let the people down in delivering its mandate

“We will instill discipline in the leadership and make sure that every child in our country has access to quality education. So, that is why education is the centrepiece.

“In fact, it is the flagship programme of our new government and we are working on that.

“I hope that we can count on the support of Nigeria not just in the area of providing classrooms but also providing the teachers.

“Our joint commission over the years stipulates that trained teachers from Nigeria should be sent to help us.

According to him, the technical assistance will make a big difference as the government moves forward in translating its manifesto into reality.

He said that the administration also takes the health sector very central noting that the country has been trying to rebuild its health infrastructure after its civil war.

“The diagnostic tools are really challenges to us and that is why those who have the means have to come to Nigeria or Ghana

“And, of course they require foreign exchange that is straining on us too and we want to make sure that those diagnostic tools are available locally,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to Nigeria for sending doctors and nurses to assist in the health sector.

“We are very grateful for that, because that is the area we need more help.

“So that those who served their two years are replaced quickly so we don’t create a gap in the health delivery system.

“We also need the help of Nigeria in the energy sector,” he added.

Mr Onyeama pledged Nigeria’s support to the new government, stressing that the present administration had been supportive to the country.

The minister said that President Muhammadu Buhari supported the country during the election and also during the tragic mudslide in the country.

He promised Nigeria’s assistance through the Technical Aid Corps.

“We have a joint cooperation of bi-national commission that has been moribund to certain extent and we will certainly cooperate to reinvigorate it.

“So we will get started on that on time and other areas that we have to cooperate.”

Health Crisis: Nigerian doctors threaten fresh strike

The Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) says it cannot guarantee industrial harmony after a scheduled meeting on June 2.

Ugochukwu Eze, the NARD Publicity and Social Secretary, Kaduna State branch, made this known at a news conference, on Thursday in Kaduna.

“As the 21 days grace handed over to the federal government to resolve all lingering issues as well as the recalling of its members sacked by the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) elapsed on Thursday May 31,
“we scheduled a meeting for June 2, while warning that we cannot guarantee industrial harmony.

“It may also interest you all that an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting of NARD is scheduled to hold on the 2nd of June, 2018.

“NARD leadership may not be able to guarantee continuous industrial harmony should our legitimate agitations be ignored by government,” the spokesman said.

Mr Eze recalled that NARD had on March 27 held an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting where issues pertaining to the unjust sack of its members in JUTH were extensively discussed.

“At the end of the meeting, a 30 days ultimatum was issued starting from the 2nd of April, 2018, which elapsed on the 2nd of May, 2018.

“Twelve days after the expiration of the ultimatum, at the Ordinary General Meeting held in ABUTH Zaria from 5th-11th May, 2018, the ultimatum was extended by 21 days to allow government to effect recall of all sacked resident doctors in JUTH.

“Also to meet up with all outstanding agreement contained in our 6th September, 2017, Memorandum of Terms of Settlement. This ultimatum ends tomorrow, 31st May, 2018,’’ he said.

Mr Eze explained that the association had exhausted all labour engagement requirements to help solve the problem in JUTH through extensive advocacy channels.

“The September 2017 strike was suspended to allow government complete implementation of the terms of settlement but there are still unmet agreements by the government.

“It may also interest the general public to know that the members of Joint Health Sector Workers Union (JOHESU) have been on strike for the past 44 days.

“Healthcare in the country has been anchored upon the shoulders of resident doctors, mainly (NARD), being the largest single body of doctors in Nigeria,” he said.

Mr Eze appealed to government and the public to impress on government to reciprocate their good will and solve their problem.

The residency training programme is a programme where Specialist Doctors are trained to guarantee availability of Specialist Health Services in the country and minimize brain drain.

Muslim rights group welcomes Jolly Nyame’s jail sentence

Mr Nyame after the ruling. The governor waited for over 20 minutes before leaving the court room

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for doing a thorough investigation into the corruption case of former governor, Jolly Nyame of Taraba.

The Director of MURIC, Ishaq Akintola, made the commendation in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

NAN reports that Mr Nyame was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory headed by Justice Adebukola Banjoko.

The judge also ordered the refund of N1.64 billion diverted by the ex-governor since May, 2007.

Mr Akintola also lauded the judge who delivered the landmark judgment for her boldness and forthrightness, adding that there was no doubt that her pronouncement would deter other kleptomaniacs from similar act in public service.

The MURIC boss advised other judges to emulate Ms Banjoko, adding that judges should sum up enough courage to deal with executive thieves standing trial before them as quickly as possible.

“This judgment marks the beginning of active participation of the judiciary and its cooperation with the executive in anti-graft war.

“We give kudos to the federal government for vigorously pursuing the war against corruption.

“Nyame’s imprisonment has cemented the resolve of this administration to bring about change in Nigeria and it will bring to five the number of ex-governors sent to jail since the beginning of President Muhammadu Buhari’s war against corruption.

”Although he was later set free, James Bala Ngilari, ex-Gov. of Adamawa State, bagged five years in March 2017, Babangida Aliyu, former Niger Governor, tasted the bitter pill on April 25, 2017 when he was remanded in prison.

”Similarly, former Gov. Sule Lamido of Jigawa was remanded in prison on May 2, 2017 and Jonah Jang, the former Gov. of Plateau, was remanded in prison custody on May 16, 2018. It is an unprecedented challenge of the status quo ante,” Mr Akintola said.

He, therefore, called on Nigerians to show appreciation for this positive development, noting that the judgment implies that there was light at the end of the tunnel.

He said that those who had lost hope in the Nigerian project should now reposition themselves as more evidence had emerged to prove that the stage was set for a better Nigeria.

The director explained that the main reason for people losing hope in the country had been the general lack of accountability in previous governments.

“Crooks in government were stealing with impunity and nobody was ever questioned or arrested. Our values were bastardised. Criminals were celebrated. But change is here.

“Those who stole our common patrimony are now being made to face the music. It therefore behoves true patriots to rally behind President Buhari and his administration,” he said.

Mr Akintola, however, urged the federal government to remain focused and consistent in its efforts to clean up the mess in Nigeria and to restore the good name of this great country in the comity of nations.

“There must be no retreat, no surrender.”

Zidane makes shock announcement over Real Madrid future

Zidane took over at Real in January 2016 as Rafa Benitez's replacement after working with the club's Castilla side

Zinedine Zidane has confirmed he will leave Real Madrid this summer.

The Frenchman has decided to walk away after guiding the club to a third Champions League victory in a row.

Zidane took over at Real in January 2016 as Rafa Benitez's replacement after working with the club's Castilla side.

Los Blancos defeated Atletico Madrid to win on penalties to win the Champions League that season before beating Juventus last year and Liverpool on Saturday.

Zidane, who is under contract until 2020 in Madrid, offered little suggestion he would walk away after the 3-1 victory in Kiev but he has decided the time is right to leave the Bernabeu.

Zinedine Zidane has confirmed he is leaving Real Madrid

Real Madrid finished runners-up to Barcelona at the end of Zidane's first league campaign in charge, but he guided his side to European glory.

Los Blancos saw off city rivals Atletico Madrid in a penalty shootout in Milan, after the match finished 1-1 following 90 minutes and extra time.

Zidane won his first La Liga title the following year and delivered a second Champions League trophy in Cardiff, after Los Blancos beat Juventus 4-1.

In doing so the Frenchman became the first manager of the modern era to win consecutive European crowns.

The Frenchman guided Real to a third Champions League victory in a row

Real Madrid struggled in La Liga this season, compared to their usual high standards, as Barcelona ran away with the title.

Ernesto Valverde's Catalan giants tied up the league in a 3-0 El Clasico win at the Bernabeu in December, heaping pressure on Zidane.

But the Los Blancos boss bounced back in typical fashion in the Champions League, guiding his side past big spenders Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16.

Real Madrid saw off last season's finalists Juventus in the quarters, beating the Italian giants 4-3 on aggregate.

Zidane was under contract until 2020 in Madrid but has walked away from his role

Up next was German champions Bayern Munich in the semis, who Real Madrid beat 2-1 in the first leg before drawing 2-2 with in the second.

Madrid met Jurgen Klopp's swashbuckling Liverpool in the final in Kiev, and were more than a match for this campaign's surprise package.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring for Los Blancos, following a Loris Karius mistake, before Sadio Mane equalised for the Reds.

Gareth Bale restored Real's lead with a stunning bicycle kick, before the Welshman put the icing on the cake with a speculative long-range effort that Karius palmed into his own net.

Chelsea puts plans for new stadium project on hold

Chelsea announced Thursday that plans for a new stadium project have been put on hold due to the "current unfavourable investment climate."

In December 2015, the club announced that capacity at Stamford Bridge would be increased from 41,600 to 60,000 through a redevelopment.

Since then, the estimated cost of the project has increased to £1 billion following delays and a dispute with a local family, according to BBC Sport.

News of the stadium project's shelving follows Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich's difficulties in obtaining a new United Kingdom visa. The Russian billionaire has become an Israeli citizen and is allowed to visit the U.K., but the 51-year-old is prohibited from working in the country, according to the Guardian's Peter Walker.

A brief statement on Chelsea's website read: "Chelsea Football Club announces today that it has put its new stadium project on hold. No further pre-construction design and planning work will occur.

"The club does not have a time frame set for reconsideration of its decision. The decision was made due to the current unfavourable investment climate."

The new stadium project was expected to be completed ahead of the 2021-22 campaign

Sit-at-home: Again, IPOB, pro-Biafra groups shut down parts of south east

*Order turns bloody in Nnewi
*Total compliance in Aba, Onitsha, Nnewi, Enugu
*Police arrests Onwuka, 21 Biafra zionists in Enugu

By Chioma Gabriel, Vincent Ujumadu, Anayo Okoli, Chidi Nkwopara, Ugochukwu Alaribe, Peter Okutu, Chinonso Alozie, Dennis Agbo, Chimaobi Nwaiwu & Davies Iheamnachor

In what can be described as about 70 per cent compliance of the sit-at home order at the instance of the  Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, yesterday, many parts of the south east zone  were shut down for business and other economic activities apart from Ebonyi and a few other places that recorded skeletal activities.

The sit-at-home  was  in remembrance of Biafran  fallen heroes  and those killed in the  struggle for the actualization of Biafra.

Reports across states in the south east revealed that shops, markets and banks were shut down in Enugu, Aba, Onitsha and Nnewi while Awka and Ebonyi recorded activities. Similarly, sit-at-home order was ignored in Owerri  and Umuahia.

In Abakaliki,  the sit-at-home order  flopped  as citizens of the state were seen going about their normal businesses without harassment and intimidation

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State had during his May 29th Democracy celebration warned that any trader that closed his shop in line with the directive of IPOB would forfeit it forever.

In Awka, what was perceived as fear of what might happen kept most people  indoors in the morning hours, even as those who carried out their businesses had nothing to worry  about.

Banks in Awka also operated without any molestation, just as government and private offices were also open for businesses.

Total compliance in Enugu

Enugu State witnessed total compliance in observing the day.

A tour around Enugu town by Vanguardshowed that few movements were noticed as shops, markets and schools remain closed with few people seen around, although few commercial transport businesses were seen making brisk business and picking up few commuters who had come out.

At the ever busy Main Market Enugu, nearly all the shops were closed. The few opened shops were seen selling to few customers who came to make purchases.

A businessman at Ogbete main line who deals on cosmetics and medical products, Cosmas Agbo, who spoke with Vanguardsaid: “Even though my shop is opened, I support the Biafran struggle and my heart is with them. Nobody has come to my shop to buy but I’m still here.”

A visit to some secondary schools and tertiary institutions in Enugu showed total compliance in the remembrance day celebration.

Nsukka

In Nsukka, business and  social engagements were on partially as few people were seen moving about major spots in the area.

At Ogige market, few traders were seen opening their shops and business places while many others were under lock and key.

Other traders were seen milling around in front of their shops, while others gathered in small groups chatting and conversing about the day’s development.

At some transport companies in the area, few buses were seen parked in the premises with few commuters purchasing tickets for their journey.

“They said we should not open our shops, so, I just decided to come around and see what is happening. I just want to be around my shop in case something bad happens,” Okey Eze, one of the traders in the market said.

Shops, schools, banks closed in Onitsha

There was total compliance in Onitsha and Nnewi with all the markets and shops in the two cities shut. Commercial banks in the two cities, roads and streets markets  all observed the directive as people stayed back in their homes in observance of the directive.

All the Federal highways especially Onitsha-Enugu expressway, from Asaba end of the road to Zik’s Roundabout to New Motor Spare Parts Nkpor, down to former Ogbunike Toll gate were ghosts of themselves as motorists and people deserted the roads in observance of the sit-at-home order.

As early as  6am  when Vanguard visited Upper Iweka, while returning from Nnewi, Upper Iweka which is known for its busy nature was deserted, even Newspaper distribution to Owerri and Awka was impossible as vehicles that distribute them were no where to be seen.

IPOB member shot in Nnewi

Even with the total compliance of the sit-at-home order in Nnewi, a  member of the IPOB was allegedly shot in a clash with a combined team of  the Army and Police at  St Mary’s Anglican Church junction Nnewi.

According to an eye witness, as early as  7:30am,  some people suspected to be  members of IPOB started making bonfire and blocking the roads. When they were accosted by the combined team of Police and Army who tried to stop them, there was altercation which led to the shooting of the victim at St Mary’s Anglican Church junction.

“The incident resulted to gathering of people in small groups, discussing the IPOB issues in low tunes, while the Police, Army and local vigilance groups on joint patrol moved from street to street clearing the roads for vehicular and human  movement,” an eye witness said.

No movement in Port Harcourt

There was huge success of the order in many areas of  Rivers State, especially Port-Harcourt where most businesses are owned and operated by  Igbos.

At Oyibo Local Government area of the state, the border LGA of Abia State, business activities were totally paralysed as the order witnessed total compliance.

The popular Ikoku spare parts market and some shops were  opened for business activities. The same situation was replicated at Garrison market and Kala iron market.

A business owner at Mile 1 Market, who simply gave his name as Uchechukwu said the order was not binding on every Igbo man, adding that it was “for those who believe in the activities of IPOB that are mandated to obey the order.”

Tragedy in Aba

Tragedy struck in Aba, Abia State when soldiers shot dead a young man near Uratta junction, Port Harcourt Road area of the city.

Eyewitnesses told Vanguard that some hoodlums invaded the area and started enforcing the sit -at-home order, stopping residents who were going about their businesses.

“Some hoodlums came to the road and started harassing people that they should go home because of the order. As they were forcing people to obey the order, a patrol team of soldiers came to the area and started shooting. People ran away but a stray bullet  hit a young man,” the eye witness said.

However, there was total compliance as markets, banks and other business centres were shut. Schools were also shut while the roads in the city were deserted as there was no vehicular movement.

Sit-at-home fails in Abakaliki

The IPOB  order flopped in Ebonyi State, as citizens of the state were seen going about their normal businesses without harassment and intimidation

When Vanguard visited the Abakaliki Main Market, meat market and Kpirikpiri markets within the metropolis around  9am, they were all opened for business as a joint patrol of security agencies with over 20 vehicles were seen patrolling the streets of the city to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

However, major transport companies like Peace Mass and Ebotrans as at the time of this report were not loading to Aba, Onitsha and Port Harcourt, where they felt people would obey the sit-at-home order of IPOB.

Shops opened in Awka

FEAR of what might happen kept most people in Awka indoors in the morning hours of yesterday following the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, even as those who carried out their businesses had nothing to worry   about.

Apart from the commercial city of Onitsha and the industrial town of Nnewi, where business activities were paralyzed in the morning, markets and shops in Awka, the state capital, were opened for business.

Banks in Awka also operated without any molestation, just as government and private offices were also open for businesses.

Vanguard gathered that the leadership of Okada riders held a meeting  on Tuesday  during which they decided not to observe the sit-at-home, which was why they operated freely in all parts of the capital territory.

In other parts of Anambra State, such as Ihiala, Ekwulobia, Otuocha, Umunze, among others, business activities took place without any hindrance.

Security men were also seen moving in convoys, obviously to ensure that no one was molested.

Reacting on the non compliance in some cities, the IPOB media and publicity secretary, Mr. Emma Powerful said in a telephone interview that it was as a result of attempts by the South East governors to sabotage the event.

Powerful said that in Port Harcourt where he monitored the sit-at-home exercise, the people complied fully, and wondered why core Igbo cities like Awka would do otherwise, if not for the activities of the governors.

Some people who spoke to Vanguard said they stayed at home because they were not certain of what might happen on the streets.

Partial compliance in Owerri

The order was not completely obeyed in Owerri, Imo State.

In Owerri metropolis, some students were seen returning home before the  2pm  closing hour.

However, there were free movement of motorists and commuters in the area monitored.   Streets like, Wethedral, Douglas, Orji, Assumpta Avenue, Onitsha and Portharcourt were active.

When Vanguard visited Eke-Ukwu market, traders were seen buying and selling their wares.

“I lost two shops in the demolition of Eke Ukwu Market by the government. I lost millions in that act of wickedness.  So I have to come out to sell my goods just to get money to feed my children,” said one of the traders,  who gave his name only as Enyeribe.

Umuahia

Residents of Umuahia, the Abia State capital did not comply with the sit-at-home order of IPOB as commercial and social activities went on unhindered in the city.

Government offices were opened with civil servants at the State Secretariat going about their normal businesses; private and public schools were also open, except those who  were on mid-term break, all the banks in the city opened for normal business as well as markets and shops on the streets.

Commercial vehicles, including Keke operators engaged in their normal businesses.

A civil servant, Emeka Ekwenyi said the sit-at-home was not necessary, as it would only end up inflicting hardship and at times injuries on the people.

If the IPOB members decided to sit-at-home, it is okay for them, but they should impose it on the people. Like I said every Igbo man believes in Biafra but the way to get it is not the way IPOB goes about it. I think they should be civil and work with elders of the region”.

MASSOB leads coalition of pro-Biafra groups to support IPOB

Meanwhile, a coalition of pro-Biafra groups yesterday called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to reverse without further delay, the wrong labelling of peaceful non-violent unarmed people agitatitain for Biafra, particularly, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB as terrorist group.

The call was made by Dr Dozie Ikedife and MASSOB leader Comrade Uchenna at Rojenny Tourist Village during the coalitions 51st Annivinersary in celebration of a Biafra Declarationby Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

In an address presented by Dr Ikedife, he said: “All who are hungry for self determination for pepple of Biafra land through either legal process, diplomatic process, dialogue consuktation, referrandum or legislative process should come together  and speak with one mind and voice.

“In-fighting is totally negative and counter productive, now that many groups have emerged, allare talking about one issue.”

Comrade Madu in his speech said: “We may disagree as a different groups due to ideological differences but we are all working together to achieve Biafra.”

 Police arrests Onwuka, 21 Biafra

The Enugu State Police command said it arrested over twenty-one members of Biafra Zionist Federation, BZF, including it’s leader Mr. Benjamin Onwuka on the Biafra Day celebration.

Onwuka was recently granted bail after many years of incaceration for attempt to declare a republic of Biafra on an Enugu live radio.

Belgian police-killer had history of violence, petty crime

People pay tribute to the victims of the Liege’s shooting on May 30, 2018, in Liege at a makeshift altar situated where the two policewomen were killed during the attack the day before. An attack that killed two policewomen and a male bystander in the eastern Belgian city of Liege on May 29, 2018 amount to “terrorist murder,” prosecutors spokesman said during a press conference. Also the attacker is suspected of killing one other person on the eve of his rampage, according to prosecutors on May 30, 2018. Benjamin Herman, who shot three people dead in a suspected terror attack in eastern Belgium, was a serial petty criminal with a drug problem who may have been radicalised in prison.

The 31-year-old Belgian was known to police since adolescence and had been in and out of prison for robbery and drug offences. Local media have portrayed him as a violent and unstable man.

He is thought to have converted to Islam in prison but questions remain over whether he became radicalised there and whether this was what drove him to carry out his murderous rampage.

“He converted to the Muslim religion in 2012 while meeting with another prisoner in Arlon,” a town in southern Belgium near Luxembourg, Justice Minister Koen Geens told broadcaster RTBF.

But both Geens and Interior Minister Jan Jambon, interviewed on Belgium’s RTL channel, were cautious about whether he had embraced Islamist militant ideology before launching his attack.

“The fact he took part in a prayer group, for example, is it a sufficient sign of radicalisation to treat him as a dangerous terrorist?” Geens asked.

“We may have been mistaken, but the response was negative,” Geens added.

Jambon echoed his point.

“There were signs of radicalisation in prison but did this radicalisation lead to these actions? There, too, we can ask ourselves questions,” Jambon said.

“We must wait for the results of the investigation.”

Herman’s name appeared in police and state security reports about radicals, though he was not the subject of the reports.

‘Terrorist murder’
Prosecutors say they are treating the case as “terrorist murder and attempted terrorist murder”.

That was partly because the method of his attack has been advocated in online videos by the Islamic State group.

Herman attacked police officers with a knife before taking their guns to shoot people.

Alain Grignard, a Belgian Islamic studies expert at the University of Liege, said Herman appeared to be a “criminal who converted”.

“People want labels that are too clear: ‘delinquent’, ‘terrorist’. The reality is between the two,” Grignard said.

Herman’s first brush with the law was in 2003 when, aged 16, he was placed for several weeks in a juvenile home in the Flemish region of Everberg.

Herman and his brother were both reported to be cocaine and heroin addicts.

“Every day they hunted for money to get their fix,” the newspaper La Meuse reported.

Herman was granted temporary release from prison on Monday morning for “family leave”. He embarked on his deadly spree instead of returning on Tuesday evening.

In a separate investigation, prosecutors also suspect Herman killed another man on the eve of his rampage.

Analysts say a high number of jihadists had trouble with the law before being radicalised.

They include several involved in the November 2015 attacks in Paris and the March 2016 Brussels suicide bombings.

Alhaji Rasheed Yussuf, the former president of Association of Stock Broking Houses of Nigeria (ASHON), attributed the persistent lull in the stock market to exit of portfolio investors due to political situation.

Yussuf said that tense situation in the Middle-Belt and political campaigns contributed to the exit of portfolio investors.

He stressed that Nigeria needed foreign investors that were committed to stay on by investing in specific industries.

“We need foreign investors but we need the ones that will come and invest in our economy.

“What we are seeing are not the ones that want to invest in our economy but the ones that want to play our market.

Any negative development, they will exit with their money. They are called speculative investors because they don’t want to take any risk.

“They come to your country as soon as they see that the foreign exchange is going down or political situation is tensed, they exit.

“The speculative segment of the foreign investors is what we are seeing in the market,’’ Yussuf said.

South South governors meet

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike welcomes South South governors

Governors of South-South states have met in Port Harcourt, where they restated their demands for 13 per cent derivation and restructuring of Nigeria.

The governors are Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State, and Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State.

Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki was represented at the meeting by the deputy governor, Mr. Phillip Shuaibu.

Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River was absent.

The governors were received on Wednesday evening by Governor Nyesom Wike at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Governor Wike led his counterparts into the meeting which was held closed-door.

At the end of the meeting, Dickson, who spoke on behalf of others re-echoed the call for restructuring and also reacted to the withdrawal of the $1 billion from the excess crude account for security.

Dickson said that the demands were in the spirit and in line with true federalism.

He said that the forum also demanded for a 13 per cent derivation from the one billion dollars withdrawn from the Excess Crude Account by the Federal Government for security.

He said that the demand was in accordance with constitutional provision.

Dickson said that the forum was not against the amount withdrawn by the Federal Government to fight insecurity in the country.

He noted that the forum expressed support for the devolution of powers among the federating States.

The forum, he said, called for the withdrawal from the National Assembly a bill on the management and administration of water resources.

Buhari’s enemies behind JOHESU strike – Northern youths

The Northern Youths Forum on Wednesday stated that the ongoing strike by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) was “politically motivated.”

The organisation alleged that the JOHESU strike was “induced by looters, fraudsters and economic saboteurs who have issues with President Muhammadu Buhari and his administration”.

Addressing a joint press conference in Jos, the National Coordinator, Maimuna Abdullahi, and Secretary of the group, Saeed Siraj, noted that the action was meant to demarket the current administration ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Noting that workers’ welfare, including conditions of service, salaries, and other emoluments should be the utmost of their employers, the group believed that the strike was in a bid to score undue political points.

NYF said: “We are bound to dissociate ourselves from the premeditated and politically sponsored strike by JOHESU which was wickedly designed to punish poor and innocent Nigerians, all in a bid to score undue political points.

“It is absolutely illegal and unheard of, to file an appeal challenging an ex-parte order; ex-parte order can only be vacated. We use this medium to call on the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, SAN, to charge the leadership of JOHESU extraction for contempt of court.

“In the same vein, we admonish the management of all the medical facilities to lay off all erring members who have refused to report for duty as mandated by the Industrial court, this lawlessness must stop now.”

The group urged the Federal Government and state governors to “take decisive action against self – seeking unions like JOHESU.”

Senate summons Prisons boss over underage imprisonment

- The controller general of prisons have been summoned by the Senate

- The summon followed reports under-age offenders and infants confined with adultsin Nigeria prisons

- Lawmakers also expressed concerns over the repercussion of keeping infants in prison with their mothers

The Senate on Wednesday, May 30, summoned the controller general, Prisons, Ahmed Ja’afaru, to appear before its Committee on Interior, to explain why under-age offenders and infants should be confined with adults in the nation’s prisons.

The upper chamber also urged various security agencies involved in the arrest and detention of juveniles to ensure that they were not incarcerated beyond 48 hours.

These resolutions were sequel to a motion on “Illegal Confinement of Under-age Offenders/Infants in the Same Prison with Adult Prisoners” brought by Senator Victor Umeh (APGA-Anambra) at plenary.

Umeh noted that he was traumatised by the gory pictures of under-age children languishing in prison as contained on pages 13 to 15 of the Nation Newspaper of Saturday, March 31.

According to him the report was captioned “Kids Behind Bars: World of Under-age Languishing in Prison”.

The lawmaker alleged police prosecutors encouraged under-age offenders to inflate their ages during arraignment in courts, assuring them that such practice would lead to their release.

He expressed concern that the repercussion of keeping infants in prison with their mothers was enormous as it would deny them proper upbringing.

The lawmaker, therefore, advocated that separating under-age offenders and the innocent infants from regular prisons as prescribed by law, would go a long way in protecting their mental health and development.

The prayers of the motion were unanimously adopted by the lawmakers after a voice vote by Senate President Bukola Saraki.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris failed to appear before the Senate after three summons.

The Senate President has said that the IGP was been summoned over various security situations in Nigeria.

Saraki said the consistent killings and kidnapping in various states across Nigeria cannot bbeb allowed to continue.

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured the new President of Sierra Leone, Mr Julius Maada Bio, of Nigeria’s support, including military assistance, as the country works towards a stable and improved economy.

The president gave the assurance when he received the Sierra Leonean President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.

President Buhari congratulated Bio on the successful elections and the transition that had ushered in a new government in the country.

“We will continually stand by you to ensure stability in your country. We believe security in the West Coast region, Africa and the world should be a collective concern,’’ he said.

The President said Nigeria had for a long period provided security support for the country, especially during the 11 years of civil war, and would continue to assist the forces on the ground to ensure the peace and stability needed for development.

According to him, he shares a lot in common with the Sierra Leonean President, which includes ruling the country as a military general, contesting several elections as opposition and winning to face the challenges of security and an ailing economy.

In his remarks, the President of Sierra Leone said his country remained grateful to Nigeria for the brotherly role it had played in ensuring an end to the protracted civil war in the country and the successful political transitions since then.

Senate investigates ‘OAU Sex-For-Marks-Scandal’

The investigation is sequel to senate’s resolution on a motion by Sen. Biodun Olujimi (PDP- Ekiti) at plenary entitled:

Senator Biodun Olujimi  (ChannelsTV)

The Senate on Wednesday, commenced investigation into the alleged sexual harassment case between a student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Monica Osagie and a lecturer of the institution, Prof. Richard Akindele.

The investigation is sequel to senate’s resolution on a motion by Sen. Biodun Olujimi (PDP- Ekiti) at plenary entitled: “The Growing Trend of Sexual Harassment in the Higher Institutions of Learning: The Case of Monica Osagie”.

The senate consequently, mandated its Committees on Tertiary Institutions and TetFund and Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to carry out a full scale investigation of the case.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Osagie had accused Akindele of deliberately failing her for rejecting his alleged sex demands.

Leading debate on the motion, Olujimilamented the growing culture of sexual harassment in institutions of higher learning across the country.

“It was for this reason that in October 2016; the Senate passed the Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Educational Institutions (Prohibition) Bill.

The Bill prescribes severe punishment for lecturers and academic staff of universities, who either sexually harass or assault their male or female students.”

She pointed out that the Osagie and Akindele’s case “has further brought home the point, further justifying the specificity and target of the new bill.

“And the need to ensure that this perversion is completely kicked out of our places of learning.

“Though the university authorities have since weighed in on the matter to ensure justice is done, this is another matter that must not be swept under the carpet of expediency, forgetfulness or deliberate abandonment.

“The case deserves greater scrutiny and attention as it signposts how serious we are as a nation to fully and exhaustively eliminate this perversion from our schools.

“This is just one out of the many cases that have come to limelight within the past decade and it shows that the pervasion is spreading across the country with both the male and female gender as victims.

“This is especially in view of the poor prosecution and conviction numbers being turned out,” she said.

The lawmaker, who lamented the reported cases of rape and other sexual violence on daily basis in national dailies, stressed the need for the parliament to bring succour and safety to the victims.

“These acts damage our children in very significant ways and also portray our country in bad light which are alien to both our cultural and religious orientation as a people,” she said.

Contributing, Sen. Olugbenga Ashafa (APC- Lagos) saluted Osagie for her courage in the ongoing investigation of the alleged sexual harassment by the lecturer in ‘a Sex-For-Marks-Scandal’.

He said Osagie’s uncommon bravery at a time many female students had come to accept sexual harassment a norm in the nation’s educational institutions was worthy of commendation.

This is because a lot of sexual harassments are being swept under the carpet.”

Concluding debate on the motion, the President of the Senate Dr Bukola Saraki stressed the need for the implementation of the Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Educational Institutions (Prohibition) Bill passed by the upper legislative chamber in 2016.

Saraki, however, urged the committees to ensure painstaking and thorough investigation of the case so that it could serve as the basis for the protection of female students on campuses.

Breaking: N1.64bn Fraud: Ex-Taraba Gov, Rev Nyame bags 14 years jail term

ABUJA-  A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting at Gudu, on Wednesday, convicted and sentenced the former Governor of Taraba State, Reverend Jolly Nyame to 14 years imprisonment without the option of fine.

Jolly Nyame

Trial Justice Adebukola Banjoko found the defendant guilty on 27 out of the 41-count money laundering charge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, preferred against him.

Specifically, the court sentenced Nyame to 14 years for criminal breach of trust, 2 years for misappropriation, 7 years for gratification and 5 years for obtaining valuable public properties without consideration.

The court held that the sentence would run concurrently, even as it discharged the defendant on 14 counts of the charge.

Justice Banjoko who gave the verdict after she turned down Nyame’s plea for leniency, said she was “morally outweighed by facts of the case”.

“Citizens of Taraba had elected the defendant, a clergyman, in three separate occasions to govern them, which shows constant level of trust. The expectation must have been so high.

“As a Reverend, he must have been seen as an epitome of morality, piety and everything good. How will Reverend Nyame begin to explain to people of Taraba State his actions and inactions?

“How can he justify causing such a collosal loss to the state?” the Judge queried.

The judge who maintained that the defendant committed “catalogue of crimes” a month before he vacated office “while under intense searchlight from security agencies”, said the court would be failing in its responsibility “if it fails to impose the full sanction”.

According the judge, evidence before the court showed that while officials that served under the defendant were returning their loot to the EFCC after they were questioned, he said Nyame “was still busy committing more crime”.

The court stressed that one of such crimes included N100million the defendant withdrew from the state treasury to host former President Olusegun Obasanjo who paid a one-day visit to Taraba State in 2007.

The judge said after she carefully examined all the evidence EFCC tendered before the court, she concluded that it was “either the defendant entered into office without a corrupt mind and became corrupted, or he was corrupted ab-initio.

“There was such a crazy level of corruption in the air in Taraba State Ministry of Finance. It is however amazing that none of the officials were arraigned”, Justice Banjoko added.

She held that Nyame “behaved like a common theif with unbridled greed”, saying his sentence would serve as a deterrent to other public office holders.

The court directed EFCC to return all the funds it recovered in the process of its investigation into the case, to the coffers of Taraba State.

The judgment came eleven years after Nyame who held sway as Governor of Taraba State from May 29, 1999, to May 29, 2007, was docked by the anti-graft agency over allegation that he looted public funds to the tune of N1.64billion.

The prosecution, in the charge dated May 13, 2007, told the court that the former governor perpetuated the fraud between January 2005 and May 2007, through various bogus contracts.

Nyame had pleaded not guilty to the charge which he insisted was not only incompetent, but brought against him in bad faith.

The trial culminated from a petition jointly signed by one Umar Baba and Kelas Obadia, entitled “Taraba State in a mess, the Commissioner of Finance goofed” written on behalf of concerned citizens of the state.

EFCC had on November 22, 2016, closed its case after it called 14 witnesses that testified before the court.

Thereafter, the ex-governor testified in defence of himself and called additional three witnesses that attempted to exenorate him of all the allegations against him.

Nyame whose trial commenced since 2005, earlier went to the Supreme Court to quash charges against him. He was turned down by the apex court on March 5, 2010.

He was among other things, accused of diverting N180million out of N250million meant for the purchase of stationeries by Taraba State government between January and February 2005, as a reward for the award of the contract to USAB International (Nig.) Ltd and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 115, 309 and 315 of the Penal Code Act Cap 532 laws of Federation of Nigeria 1990.

Meantime, in the over 300-paged judgment that lasted over six hours, trial Justice Banjoko said there was a nexus between Nyame and the fictitious N250m contract that was awarded for the bulk purchase of stationaries and office equipment.

Justice Banjoko noted that Nyame had through his then Commissioner of Finance, Alhaji Abubakar Tutare, approved a Memo for that contract which was awarded to a firm, Saman Global Ventures, on January 1, 2005, sidelining key officials of the Ministry of Finance in the process.

“The defendant gave that Memo life by giving his approval”, the court held, noting that N180m was subsequently diverted from the conctract sum and handed to the ex-governor.

Though the court held that evidence EFCC tendered against the ex-governor in respect of the transaction was “circumstantial” as no other document had his signature apart from the Memo, it however stressed that the manner funds were approved and released from the Taraba State treasury, showed that the defendant acted in breach of his oath of office.

“It is disheartening to note that between 2004 to 2005, the Ministry of Finance in Taraba State was specially an enclave, it was a den of criminal activities best illustrated with Ali Baba and the 40 thieves.

“The court finds the defendant guilty as charged.

“The clear purpose of the money was diverted. There was no evidence of purchase of the stationary”, Justice Banjoko held.

Besides, the Judge held that Nyame repeatedly approved release of funds to the firm despite being aware that it neither purchased the stationaries nor executed any contract.

She said there was no evidence that Nyame who had within five weeks, moved over N345m from the Taraba State coffers for purchase of stationaries, made any attempt to prosecute the firm or to set up a panel of inquiry, when the fraud was brought to his attention.

“The progenitor of this impunity was no one else than the defendant himself. The defendant cannot feign ignorance of this collosal fraud.

“He who approves must be accountable to what he approved. The defendant had the dominion over the state fund and only him could say open-sesame to the vault of Taraba State.

“The defendant cannot escape responsibilty or cling to the thin plank of mere approval”.

The court also held that the defendant “dishonestly” diverted public funds through the Taraba State Liaison Office, on the guise that it was used for the purchase of Rice that was shared to his supporters.

It also held that the defendant committed “criminal breach of trust beyond reasonable doubt”, when he approved N111m to host guests when the Mambilla Power Project was commissioned, even as it equally found him guilty of receiving gratification to the tune of N80m.

The court said it was amazed that Nyame had in his bid to defend the charge, “provided the entire arsenal for the prosecution”.

It observed that the defendant admitted to certain offences, seeking at the end for a plea bargain. He was also very inconsistent especially regarding the presidential visit and the issue of security votes”.

Nyame had after he was found him giulty, begged the court through his lawyer to temper Justice with mercy, insisting he had no previous criminal record. He told the court that he has dependants that rely on him for their subsistence.

The defence lawyer said the court could punish his client by imposing fine against him rather than imprisonment.

Nevertheless, EFCC’s lawyer, Oluwaleke Atolagbe, urged the court to impose the maximum sanction to serve as a deterrent to other public office holders.

Aside the former finance commissioner in Taraba State during Nyame’s tenure, Tutare, among those that testified before the court included a compliance officer with Zenith Bank Plc, Mr. Olubunmi Ogunode, as well as the Permanent Secretary to Taraba State government, Mr Dennis Okuma Nev.

Nev told the court that he was at a time, compelled to raise three separate memos for the withdrawal of N100m, which he said was used by Nyame to host former President Olusegun Obasanjo when he visited the state in 2001.

Similarly, an Accountant with the Rural Electrification Board in Jalingo, Taraba State, Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, narrated before the court, how the ex-governor used his name to withdraw N282m from Zenith Bank PLC, using 20 separate cheques.

Mohammed said the illicit transactions took place between 2005 and 2007 when he functioned as an accountant in charge of Taraba State liaison office in Abuja.

Nyame had through his lawyer, Mr. Charles Edosomwan, SAN, prayed the court to strike out the charge and discharge him on the basis that the prosecution was unable to effectively discharge the burden of proof placed on it by the law.

However, in a ruling on January 14, 2016, Justice Banjoko held that Nyame’s contention was bereft of merit.

The Judge further dismissed a no-case-submission that was made by the defendant who contended that EFCC failed to by way of credible evidence, nail him to the alleged fraud.

A Mongolian ban targeting civil servants on the use of social network sites including Facebook, Twitter and Youtube while at work has come into force, according to the government on Wednesday.

The government’s decision was made on May 23 and took effect Tuesday.

It is intended to prevent cyber attacks and to ensure the safety of government information networks, according to a statement released by the Communications and Information Technology Authority.

Mongolia’s General Intelligence Agency will help monitor the ban’s implementation.

NAN reports that on March 9, 2016, government workers in Tanzania were banned from using social media and chat apps during work hours.

Transport and communication ministry officials have been warned that “gossiping” on social media will lead to dismissal.

It is not clear how the ban will be enforced amidst increasing social media popularity.

The minister told the BBC’s Halima Nyanza that social media use was interfering with Tanzania’s development.

Cheap phone data bundles are enabling wider use of platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter in Tanzania.

Name ‘notorious bribe seekers’, Senate dares Jega

Former INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jegaannouncing results in the 2015 election.

The Nigerian Senate has dared a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, to mention the names of committee chairmen who seek bribe at the National Assembly.

The call followed a point of order raised by Isa Misau (APC, Bauchi Central). He had stood up to express disappointment at the comments of the former INEC boss.

Mr Jega on Monday accused federal lawmakers of seeking bribes to carry out their constitutional duties.

He said chairmen of committees in the National Assembly were more notorious for bribe taking antics.

He made the accusation while delivering the year’s Democracy Day lecture at a gathering in Abuja.

Those at the event included President Muhammadu Buhari; Senate President Bukola Saraki; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.

Mr Jega said he had “spoken to quite a number of chief executives who complained of high demand for bribes from members of the National Assembly in the name of so-called oversight functions.

“Some chairmen of committees at the National Assembly are notorious for seeking for bribes,” he said.

The position of the former INEC Chairman confirms a story earlier published by PREMIUM TIMES in which some heads of government agencies complained of how National Assembly members were harassing them for bribe.

Coming under order 43, Mr Misau described Mr Jega’s comments as unfortunate. He said the statement is very weighty because “the programme was televised live.”

“The thing they need to understand is that these live programmes are watched around the world. And at the time he made that statement, I am a member of ECOWAS parliament and I after the lecture, I went to the parliament. Most of the parliamentarians, this was the question they were asking me, that what the Professor said, is it true or not?

He further dared the former INEC boss to name the committee chairmen who sought bribes.

“I feel that not only Professor Jega but anybody that would make statements concerning the credibility of this Senate and the chairmen, I think you should be bold enough to mention the committee chairmen, especially when it is about fighting corruption in Nigeria.

“If we really want to fight corruption and want to help the government, he would not be making such statements without mentioning the committee chairmen and those who gave him that sort of information. I felt embarrassed. We need the professor to throw more light on what he made,” he said.

Reacting to this, Mr Saraki, said he was “highly embarrassed” by Mr Jega’s statement as he too was at the programme.

He said everyone is committed to fighting corruption and Mr Jega’s comment does not help the fight against corruption.

“It is a slight to the integrity of some of us, where such a statement is made. If he has those kinds of evidences, he should bring it forward. Because to say that, is to suggest that every member of the National Assembly is part of this; even those who are not part of this are condoling this action which is far from the truth.

“I think the professor who is respected should come out and mention these kinds of members he is aware of. If he can’t come out and name them then he should not make such branding statements.

“Going forward to all distinguished and respected Nigerians, in issues that have to do with the institutions and a parliament, if there are cases like this, we have always said that we are not going to cover up for anybody and future accusations, they should name them and see what the institution would do in trying to ensure that the necessary sanctions are taken,” Mr Saraki said.

JOHESU: Health workers to suspend strike as court ‘takes over’ negotiations

The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) says it is “considering” suspending the ongoing strike by health workers which has crippled services at public hospitals across Nigeria.

A report by Vanguard newspaper stated that the decision followed the intervention of the National Industrial Court (NIC), which offered to take over the mediation process between the striking workers and government.

Confirming the development, National Vice Chairman of JOHESU, Ogbonna Chimela, Wednesday in a phone interview with PREMIUM TIMES, however, said the union was still ‘consulting’ and ‘considering’ when and how to suspend the strike.

“Yes, we are in the court in Abuja and the judge made some pronouncements but we are still consulting and considering the next move and when to suspend. You will get the final details soon,” he said.

About two weeks ago, the court ordered the workers to return to work within 24 hours. This followed an ex-parte motion filed by a non-governmental organisation.

But the union which said it remained ‘unmoved’ and was yet to be served with the order by Justice Babatunde Adejumo of the court, later confirmed receiving the order.

JOHESU, a body of all other health workers except doctors, called the strike 43 days ago.

The impasse has caused many deaths. Patients are passing through untold pains and their relatives are grumbling as federal, state and local government health institutions have been brought to their knees.

There were meetings between the government and the union with the Ministers of Health and Labor, Isaac Adewole and Chris Ngige leading the negotiations.

No common ground has been reached in these meetings, however, and members of JOHESU are accusing both officials of bias.

In fact, they called for removal of Mr Adewole as health minister, labelling him the major barrier to the resolution of the strike.

In Wednesday’s ruling, the court mandated its mediation centre to take over the negotiation and reconciliation processes within the next 24 hours in the interest of the public.

Responding, health ministry’s spokesperson, Boade Akinola, said the ministry was yet to receive the ruling.

“We have not seen the ruling, when we do so, we will be able to respond but rest assured that the Ministry of Health always obey court orders,” she told PREMIUM TIMES.

Meanwhile, the leadership of JOHESU in Lagos on Wednesday suspended the industrial action in the state.

Olatunji Tajudeen, the Lagos State JOHESU chairman who also confirmed the Industrial Court ruling, said government hospitals in the state had been directed to suspend the strike.

“The strike is today (Wednesday) suspended in Lagos State. This was approved by our national body and it will take effect immediately,” he said.

Mr Tajudeen said the suspension was because of the “achievements and commitments” made by the state governor to the plight of the health workers.

Three dead in suspected ‘terror’ shooting in Belgian city

Police and ambulance are seen at the site where a gunman shot dead three people, two of them policemen, before being killed by elite officers, in the eastern Belgian city of Liege on May 29, 2018. The shooting occurred around 10:30am (0830 GMT) on a major artery in the city close to a high school. “We don’t know anything yet,” the spokeswoman for the Liege prosecutors office, told AFP when asked about the shooter’s motives. / AFP PHOTO / JOHN THYS

A gunman on Tuesday shot dead two police officers with their own weapons before killing a bystander in a brazen suspected terror attack in Belgium, briefly taking a hostage at a school before being killed by police.

The carnage in the gritty eastern industrial city of Liege began around 10:30 am (0830 GMT) when the attacker armed with a knife stabbed two police officers repeatedly before using their own firearms to kill them, prosecutors said.

Federal prosecutors said they had launched a terrorist investigation into the incident, which comes with Belgium on high alert after a string of attacks including twin suicide bombings in Brussels in 2016 claimed by the Islamic State group.

“Armed with a knife, the suspect followed and attacked two police officers, and used their own firearms to kill them,” prosecutor Philippe Dulieu told a news conference.

“He continued on foot, attacking a parked vehicle where he opened fire on a 22-year-old man in the passenger seat. The young man died.

“He then continued and entered the Leonie de Waha school. He took a woman working there as hostage. Police intervened, he came out firing on the police officers, wounding several before he was killed.”

Eric Van Der Sypt, spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office, told AFP there were “elements that point in the direction that this is a terrorist act”.

According to Belgian broadcaster RTBF, the shooter was released from prison on Monday and was only known for minor infractions with no known links to extremism.

Prime Minister Charles Michel condemned what he called “cowardly and blind violence”.

“All our support for the victims and their loved ones. We are following the situation with the security services and the crisis centre,” Michel tweeted.

‘Horrible act’
Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon said Belgium’s Federal Crisis Centre was monitoring the situation.

“Our thoughts are with the victims of this horrible act. We are in the process of establishing an overview of exactly what happened,” Jambon wrote on Twitter.

A major security cordon was set up around the area, while panicked parents came to collect their children from the school complex.

The governor of Liege province said all the children and staff were safe and unhurt.

“All the children are fine, those of the primary and kindergarten saw nothing, they were evacuated through the back of the school,” Julie Fernandez, mother of a 7-year-old child at the school, told AFP.

“They were cared for by staff and psychologists and high school students were cared for in a nearby park,” added Fernandez, who is also an MP.

Belgium has been on high alert since the smashing of a terror cell in the town of Verviers in January 2015 that was planning an attack on police.

The cell also had links to Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the mastermind of the November 2015 Islamic State attacks on Paris that killed 130 people.

Belgium further raised its terror alert level after the Paris attack and placed the capital Brussels on lockdown for a week.

The country was then hit by its own IS suicide attacks on Brussels airport and a metro station, which killed 32 people in 2016.

In August 2016, a machete-wielding man shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) attacked two policewomen in the industrial town of Charleroi before being shot dead.

The country’s law enforcement agencies and intelligence services came under intense scrutiny for apparently missing a series of leads after the Paris attacks that could have led to the Brussels bombers.

‘I let them down’, Karius apologises to Liverpool after final flop

Heart-broken Loris Karius has apologised to Liverpool’s shattered stars after his costly mistakes condemned the Reds to defeat in the Champions League against Real Madrid.

Karius gifted Real a 3-1 victory in Kiev on Saturday as he threw the ball against Madrid striker Karim Benzema in a bizarre opening goal.

The 24-year-old German capped a wretched night when he allowed Gareth Bale’s long-range effort to slip into the net for the third goal even though the shot was straight at him.

Karius was in tears at the final whistle and none of Liverpool’s frustrated players stopped to console him on the pitch.

He walked over to Liverpool’s fans to hold his hands up in an attempted apology before publicly saying sorry to his team-mates and the club after the match.

“I lost my team the game. I’m sorry for everyone — from the team, from the whole club — that the mistakes cost dearly,” Karius told TalkSport.

“If I could go back in time, I would. I feel sorry for my team. I know I let them down.

“It’s very hard right now but that’s the life of a goalkeeper. These goals cost us the title, basically.”

Karius faces a close-season of torment as he tries to block out the worst moment of his career.

And former Liverpool goalkeeper Ray Clemence says Karius will have to live with his mistakes “for the rest of his life”.

Clemence knows what it takes to win the sport’s elite club prize after playing for Liverpool in their victorious European Cup finals in 1977, 1978 and 1981.

The 69-year-old admitted Karius had let down his team with the high-profile howlers.

“He’s made two horrendous errors at vital times in the game and he has to live with that,” Clemence told BBC Radio on Sunday.

“He’s got the whole summer to think about it and when you make mistakes in massive games like that they will be with you for the rest of your life, because people will remember them and keep reminding you of them.”
