Brighton 1-0 Man United: Devils fail to claim second spot

Manchester United failed to cement second place in the Premier League after going down 1-0 to Brighton in the Premier League on Friday night.

Pascal Gross was the hero as his second half strike secured safety for the Seagulls, while making the Red Devils wait before they can confirm their position at the end of the season.

With a chance to cement their place in second on the table, United knew all they had to do was win here, and it looked like going to plan as early as the third minute, when Marouane Fellaini found the back of the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Before long and in the 20th minute, Glenn Murray received an accurate pass and found some space for a shot. The keeper was prepared and denied his long-range effort towards the left post.

However, despite the interesting way the half began, it soon faded out with no real chances created all through until the players went in for the break.

A defence-splitting pass on 50 minutes was taken in his stride by Paul Pogba in the box. Without even looking up he drilled a shot towards the bottom left corner, but Mathew Ryan pulled off a brilliant save.  The start of the second half looked really exciting in prospect.

Seven minutes later, the first goal of the match was scored, but probably not in the direction you would have expected. Gross leapt to meet an excellent cross and steered a fantastic header past the goalkeeper, inside the right post, and the Seagulls were in the lead.

That goal appeared to have jolted United and they increased the tempo of the game as they attacked Brighton, but nothing seems to be coming out of it as they even struggled to create meaningful chances that would have resulted in a goal.

In the end, there was nothing that could be done as Brighton emerged winners.
