Herdsmen, farmers clashes: Cattle colonies to start next week

Herdsmen, farmers clashes: Cattle colonies to start next week

Cattle on farm [Photo: View Point Nigeria]
The Federal Government says work will commence next week on cattle colonies in states that has indicated interest to establish them.
PREMIUM TIMES reported the mixed reactions that have trailed the proposal for cattle colonies. Some states like Benue and Taraba, which have experienced clashes between farmers and herdsmen, have rejected the proposal, while others like Kogi supported it.
Audu Ogbeh, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, disclosed the imminent commencement on Friday during a visit to the Agriculture and Veterinary Complex of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
Mr. Ogbeh said the National Economic Council on Thursday set up a 10-member committee comprising the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, as chairman and nine governors to facilitate the commencement of the cattle colonies in interested states.
“We are happy that we are making progress in agriculture now.
“One of the most topical issues we have today is that of farmers and herdsmen clashes.
“If we do not deal with it quickly, we run the risk of damaging the harmony and the co-existence of Nigeria as a country. The killings are getting too many.
“In our attempt to solve the problem, we have proffered certain solutions but perhaps we were not sensitive enough to Nigeria’s fragile sensitivities and suspicions.
“When we spoke of colonies, we were immediately greeted with reactions that this was an attempt to cease Nigeria’s land and give to the Fulanis to colonise.
“The intention is not for Fulanis or anyone to colonise any territory. It is to provide a haven for cattle to graze in peace under controlled environments to prevent the conflicts between farmers and herdsmen.
“Only yesterday, a committee was set up by the Vice President with members, most of them, state governors discussing this matter and resolving that states that are interested will begin work on this matter as soon as next week.’’
The minister said that the federal government would engage the services of the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) to assist in the production of fodder for cattle.
According to him, open grazing is posing serious challenges and it is not too efficient for the cattle.
Mr. Ogbeh described open grazing as a `torture’ to cattle which usually do not enjoy long distance walks.
“It doesn’t allow us to harvest milk; the cows are not well fed. What is going on is almost torture to animals.
“If we can create a new environment for cattle, give them what they need, protect them from rustlers, the herdsmen will quickly discover that they are making far more money than what they are doing now,’’ Mr. Ogbe said.
Earlier, the Director of NAPRI, Clarence Lakpini, said pastoralists in the country had no fewer than 19.7 million cattle and 113.8 million sheep and goats which were currently grazing.
“We have a population of about 19.7 million cattle and total of 113.8 million sheep and goats. These are animals that graze and 90 per cent of these are owned by the pastoralists.
“These animals contribute a lot to the GDP of Nigeria. In fact, in the agricultural sector, it contributes 30 per cent of the National Agricultural GDP and of the National GDP, 3.2 per cent.’’
Mr. Lakpini also said that NAPRI had gone into partnership with various animal stakeholders to resolve the conflict between farmers and herdsmen across the country.

Knicks' Kristaps Porzingis: 'Players know' I should be an All-Star starter

Knicks' Kristaps Porzingis: 'Players know' I should be an All-Star starter

NBA, New York Knicks , Philadelphia 76ers
NBA players voted Knicks forward Kristaps Porzingis as an All-Star starter over Philadelphia's Joel Embiid, but Embiid won the overall vote with support from fans and media.
Porzingis stated clearly how he felt about the voting when asked about it on Friday.
"Players know," Porzingis said, according to published reports. "That's all I'm going to say."
Starters were determined by a vote from fans, players and a select group of media.
Embiid ranked third in fan and media voting for Eastern Conference frontcourt players but was fourth in the player vote. The top three frontcourt players from each conference earned a starting spot.
Porzingis finished third in the player vote for Eastern Conference frontcourt starter but was fourth among fan and media voters.
Fans accounted for 50 percent of the vote, while all current players and the media panel accounted for 25 percent each, which is how Embiid finished ahead of Porzingis in the overall vote.
Embiid, LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo were named starters when the NBA announced the vote on Thursday.
Porzingis hopes to be voted in as an All-Star reserve. Head coaches vote for the reserves. Those results will be announced on Tuesday.
"I would hope so," he said on Friday, according to reports. "In my mind, I deserve it. All I got to do is play good and win games and the results will take care of itself."
Entering play Friday, Porzingis was averaging 23.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 2.4 blocks in 39 games for the Knicks (20-25).
By comparison, Embiid was averaging 23.9 points, 11 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.9 blocks in 32 games for Philadelphia (21-20).

Galaxy Note 9 Could Beat iPhone X With This

Galaxy Note 9 Could Beat iPhone X With This

Samsung might have found a way to remove the unsightly notch and bezels around its screen to deliver what could be a far more appealing visual experience in this year's Galaxy Note 9.

Credit: Tom's GuideThe folks over at Let's Go Digital discovered a patent Samsung filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) that shows a smartphone with no notch and no bezels. But like those handsets that come with those features, the Galaxy Note 9 still offers an earpiece, microphone, and front-facing cameras.

According to Let's Go Digital, the patent describes how Samsung could effectively cut holes in the screen and place components behind it that would utilize those holes. The screen would come with a hole for the earpiece, for instance, or one that would support a front-facing physical fingerprint sensor. All around, the handset would be covered by its display.Credit: LetsGoDigital

Apple's iPhone X has what some may consider a controversial design. The device eliminates bezels around the screen to put content front and center, but has an unsightly notch at the top where its earpiece and front-facing camera is placed. The notch doesn't stretch across the display, but it distracts from the broader user experience.

Samsung also offers bezels above and below the screen in its Galaxy S8 line and the Galaxy Note 8 that are similarly used to house components. But these areas don't swoop down into or interrupt the display.

Samsung's patent suggests that there's an evolution going on in smartphone design and the iPhone X, Galaxy S8, and Galaxy Note 8 are an interim stop towards a smartphone that has a face entirely covered by a screen.

Looking ahead, it's possible that the technology described in the patent could make its way to the Galaxy Note 9. But it's also worth noting that like other big companies, Samsung files for patents all the time. And it's possible this one will never find its way to a device.

Big storm expected to dump heavy snow in Sierra Nevada

Big storm expected to dump heavy snow in Sierra Nevada

winter storm system is heading to California, and is expected to bring the first significant snow to the northern Sierra Nevada since November, but spare Southern California the threat of mudslides.
On Thursday, rain is forecast for the San Francisco Bay Area, while the Sierra is expected to see heavy snowfall by Thursday afternoon into Friday morning. The highest elevations of the Sierra could get 1½ feet to 2 feet of snow, while the elevation at Lake Tahoe could get perhaps half a foot of snow, said meteorologist Mark Faucette of the National Weather Service ’s Reno office.
The northern Sierra Nevada has seen a disappointing snow season so far; a webcam at Truckee airport shows no snow accumulated on the ground.
“In the pantheon of big Sierra storms, it’s not a huge Sierra storm. But when you compare it to rest of what’s gone on the rest of this winter, it’s significant,” Faucette said.

In Santa Barbara County, forecasters said that less than 0.1 inches of rain is expected to fall on Montecito, which suffered through deadly mudslides this month. “That amount of rain should not be a problem. There’s always a concern anytime we have precipitation coming in … but we’re pretty confident that it’s going to be an amount that shouldn’t cause problems,” said meteorologist Kathy Hoxsie of the weather service’s Oxnard office.
There is a chance of snow on the surface of the Grapevine. But rainfall amounts in the L.A. area are not expected to be particularly impressive. Orange County and the Inland Empire are probably going to see 0.1 inches of rain or less, and the mountains in San Bernardino County are expected to get as little as a dusting of snow to as much as 2 inches.
“It’s not bringing a whole lot of moisture with it,” said meteorologist Philip Gonsalves with the weather service’s San Diego office. The storm that brought the mudslides to Montecito was able to access moisture from the subtropical region of the Pacific Ocean, but the upcoming storm is not.
In Los Angeles, 1.89 inches of rain has fallen since the water year began on Oct. 1, short of the average of 5.79 inches for this time of the season. San Francisco has seen 7.23 inches of rain in the same time period, short of the average of 11.33 inches for this point in the water year.

“This last big storm system helped quite a bit,” said meteorologist Duane Dykema with the weather service’s Monterey office, “but we’re still well behind normal for this time of year.”

See What Google's Secret Fuchsia OS Looks Like

See What Google's Secret Fuchsia OS Looks Like

Report by: HENRY T. CASEY

Google — apparently not satisfied with having a pair of operating systems in Androidand Chrome OS — is not-so-secretly building a third: Fuchsia. And we're finally seeing what it looks like today.

The Fuchsia desktop in laptop mode. Credit: Ron Amadeo/ArsTechnica

This first look comes from an Ars Technica report, as the site managed to compile Fuchsia on a Linux PC and then stream it over to a Google Pixelbook. While Fuchsia initially only ran on Intel's NUC mini PCs and the Acer Switch Alpha 12 laptop, reports of Google internally testing the OS on a Pixelbook prompted the site to try it on that premium-level Google-made notebook.

Looking at photos of Fuchsia in action appears to confirm early rumors that Google wanted to merge Android and Chrome OS, as it offers both phone and laptop modes. Currently, the OS's Fuchsia button, a pair of fuchsia-colored circles, is used to switch between those modes, and a white devices button in the bottom right allows you to rotate the virtual phone between portrait and landscape orientations.

Dragging and dropping apps onto each other is performed for split-view mode. Credit: Ron Amadeo/Ars Technica

After opening a few apps — which don't exactly work smoothly at present — going back to the Fuchsia desktop shows thumbnails of what you have open, date and time, battery and Wi-Fi info and the Google search bar. From this desktop view, you can drag one app icon onto another, to merge them into a split-view mode, which looks pretty cool, and sounds like a more natural way than how it works on the iPad in iOS 11.

Of note is that Fuchsia's Google bar looks more capable than what Chrome OS versions have shown in the past, giving prompts such as "Play Good Vibes Playlist" likely based on previous activity or time of day (a Google Play Music feature). Scrolling up from the desktop fades away the Google bar and shows more recent apps.

The Fuchsia home screen in phone mode mode. Credit: Ron Amadeo/Ars Technica

Phone mode looks similar, just condensed. In Google's documentation about Fuchsia, it noted the OS is meant for "modern phones and modern personal computers with fast processors," so the existence of a phone makes some sense. What's confusing, though is that Ars was running Fuchsia natively, with no emulator mode, so why would phone mode be accessible from a laptop?

Fuchsia is definitely still in testing, as a "Slow Mode" banner always splayed itself across the top right banner, as the OS is always compiling via debug mode during usage. You can't even log into a Google account in Fuchsia at the moment, as the login screens froze and locked up constantly during Ars' testing.

How secret is Google trying to keep Fuchsia? It's not even hosting the files for it on its own developer site, but instead on fuchsia.googlesource.com. So, it stands to reason that it might be a while before any product ships running this OS.

Wenger confirms Mkhitaryan’s move is close, gives update on Aubameyang

Transfer news: Wenger confirms Mkhitaryan’s move is close, gives update on Aubameyang

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, is confident he is signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Manchester United very soon.

Mkhitaryan is set to be included in the deal that will take Alexis Sanchez to Old Trafford.

“The wages (for Mkhitaryan) would not be a problem.

“This would be an exchange of players and I think one would replace the other. Are we still in the transfer market after that, yes,” Wenger told the media on Thursday morning.

The Gunners boss also revealed Malcom is unlikely to join this window, but refused to rule out a move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

“I have nothing to add. This kind of thing is better when it is secret. You announce it when it is over the line. Nothing else is close,” he added.

Chelsea accused of breaking rules on signing of 25 foreign minors

Chelsea accused of breaking rules on signing of 25 foreign minors

Hannah Foslien / Getty Images Sport / Getty

Chelsea was reportedly dealt another blow by FIFA.

According to the Guardian's David Hytner, Chelsea was accused in an inquiry by FIFA of breaking the rules on the signings of 25 minors. The initial investigation apparently related to the signing of foreign footballers aged under 18, and the Blues, who face a possible transfer ban from FIFA's Disciplinary Committee, said they complied with the regulations of football's governing body when recruiting players.

The matter is allegedly in the hands of FIFA's Disciplinary Committee, and the number of cases could rise.

In September, in an emailed response to questions about media reports regarding Chelsea signing foreign players under the age of 18, FIFA confirmed that an investigation is ongoing. "We cannot provide any details concerning the matters under investigation," football's governing body said.

The initial investigation was reportedly carried by out the compliance unit of the FIFA Transfer Matching System, and it's believed that it was first alerted by the case of Bertrand Traore, who signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Chelsea in October 2013 and completed the move in December 2013, when the Burkinabe attacker was 18 years old. Pictures apparently emerged of him playing for the Blues in a non-competitive game in October 2011, when he was just 16 years old, and the images were brought to FIFA's attention in January 2016.

The Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players dictate that international transfers are only permitted if the player is over the age of 18. There are three exceptions, but FIFA was allegedly concerned that Traore, who joined OIympique Lyonnais for €10 million in June, didn't appear to fulfil any of them.

The FIFA Transfer Matching System reportedly flagged 25 cases in which it's thought that Chelsea may have transgressed, and the findings were passed to FIFA's Disciplinary Committee, which requested information from Chelsea and is in contact with the Football Association.

In January 2014, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid were sanctioned for breaches relating to the international transfer and registration of players under the age of 18. Both clubs served a transfer ban, although Los Blancos had their ban reduced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Barcelona was sanctioned for the same thing in April 2014.

DE GEA NAMED IN FIFA TEAM OF THE YEAR FOR 2017

DE GEA NAMED IN FIFA TEAM OF THE YEAR FOR 2017

Report by Adam Higgins

In recognition of his phenomenal performances for Manchester United and Spain, David De Gea has been named in the inaugural EA SPORTS FIFA Team of the Year.

The 27-year-old was among 55 players who were originally shortlisted for inclusion by EA SPORTS based on their real-life performances throughout 2017.

The starting XI was then voted for by a select list of athletes, media and members of the EA SPORTS FIFA community, who were all asked to create a team that consisted of a goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards. These were later shared on Twitter using the hashtag #TOTYVote.

De Gea's inclusion in the EA SPORTS FIFA Team of the Year has arrived after he was recently included on the 30-man shortlist for the 2017 Ballon D'Or, which was won by United legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

Congratulations to David!

Check out the team in full: David De Gea (Manchester United); Marcelo (Real Madrid), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Leonardo Bonucci (AC Milan), Dani Alves (Paris Saint-Germain); N'Golo Kante (Chelsea), Luka Modric (Real Madrid), Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City); Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur), Lionel Messi (Barcelona).

RACE FOR THE GOLDEN GLOVE

De Gea's shut-out in Monday's 3-0 win over Stoke City means he has now kept 13 clean sheets in the Premier League this season – which is more than any other keeper.

David is currently one ahead of Chelsea stopper Thibault Courtois and has two clean sheets more than Manchester City's Ederson, while Hugo Lloris of Tottenham Hotspur has 10 to his name.

Our no.1 has never won the Golden Glove award and was most recently pipped to the prize by Courtois last season, although he has an excellent chance this campaign with the help of our mean defence.

A NEW CONTRACT IN THE WORKS

Jose Mourinho hopes the club will soon agree a new long-term contract for De Gea, who is closing in on 300 appearances for the club following his 2011 transfer from Atletico Madrid.

In the short term, however, the manager revealed at the weekend that United will trigger a clause in the current deal that will extend the goalkeeper's stay for at least another another 12 months.

"A goalkeeper like he is, at a club that wants to be better and better and better – we are not going to let that option go away," Mourinho told reporters. "We are going to try. I just say what is obvious and any one of you would say the same: David is to keep."

OnePlus Probing Credit Card Fraud Complaints

OnePlus Probing Credit Card Fraud Complaints

Report ADAM ISMAIL

If you purchased something from OnePlus’ website over the last few months — perhaps a shiny new OnePlus 5T — you’re going to want to closely monitor your credit card statements over the coming weeks.

OnePlus is currently responding to complaints from at least 170 customers who encountered fraudulent charges on their credit accounts shortly after buying items on the OnePlus website.

The customer concerns emerged over this past weekend, and the issues seem to be limited to those who completed purchases directly on the OnePlus site, without using third parties such as PayPal. According to OnePlus, customer payment information is never stored on its own site, but forwarded to a payment partner, where it is processed on a secure server.

Based on a poll on OnePlus’ community forums, the bulk of the breaches appear to be stemming from transactions done in the last two months, with a few users here and there reporting fraud that occurred earlier —  though it’s unclear how connected those instances are to OnePlus’ site.

What To Do If You're Affected

The advice for anyone who's bought something from OnePlus in the past couple of months is straightforward: Check your payment-card statements (including the most recent transactions, which you can check online or over the phone) and report anything suspicious to your card issuer. (For Visa and MasterCard, the issuer is the bank printed on the card.) You're almost certainly off the hook for any fraudulent use as long as you report what you've seen right away.

OnePlus has since posted an FAQ on its forums explaining everything the company knows about what happened, while urging customers to get in touch if they have any comments or concerns. In the meantime, the company has suspended all credit card payments (although PayPal is still available) and posted the following response:

"At OnePlus, we take information privacy extremely seriously. Over the weekend, members of the OnePlus community reported cases of unknown credit card transactions occurring on their credit cards post purchase from oneplus.net. We immediately began to investigate as a matter of urgency, and will keep you updated. This FAQ document will be updated to address questions raised."

We’ve reached out to OnePlus for additional comments, and will update this article when we receive a reply.

MORE: OnePlus 5T Can't Stream Netflix in HD, Fix Promised

Interestingly, the FAQ acknowledges a potential flaw in OnePlus’ commerce system. The company previously utilized the Magento e-commerce platform, which was attacked several years ago by a keylogger known as Magecart. OnePlus says it began moving away from Magento before that breach, and never used Magento for credit cards in the first place.

However, while OnePlus claims customer data is never saved on its website, an independent audit by Fidus Information has revealed that some information is kept, albeit briefly, on OnePlus’ own servers before it’s pushed to its payment partner.

Because the payment form is hosted by OnePlus, Fidus says attackers are able to capture the content of form fields with clever JavaScript, despite the fact that none of the processing actually happens on OnePlus’ end.

For OnePlus, this breach is the latest in a line of recent security snafus. In October, the company was discovered to have been collecting identifiers and usage data from phones and sending them to servers in China without customers' knowledge. A month later, a low-level diagnostics app labeled EngineerMode was found on all of OnePlus' handsets, allowing attackers to collect a wealth of information should they get their hands on a device.

David De Gea named his closest friend among other goal keeper

David De Gea named his closest friend among other goal keeper

Report by Adam Marshall

WHO IS DE GEA'S CLOSEST GOALKEEPING FRIEND?

David De Gea is the cover star of the latest edition of Inside United, which is out now, and the Manchester United keeper had plenty to say during an in-depth interview.

The Spain international answered a series of questions supplied by the club's official magazine and revealed which goalkeeper he is closest to away from Old Trafford.

"You always get on well with your opposite number," he said. "Usually when you play against each other. But the one I know best is Joel [Robles], the Everton keeper. We were at Atletico Madrid together and we get on really well. So I’m closest to him as, with the rest, it’s more just when you are playing against them. Joel’s a top bloke."

So much is made about the goalkeepers' union, that special bond that exists between the guys who play between the posts - and De Gea admits he studies his fellow stoppers on a regular basis.

"To be honest, I watch all goalkeepers," he explained. "I observe almost all of them when I’m watching football on TV. I like to watch the match and I like to watch other keepers. You watch them all to see what good attributes they have, I think it’s always a positive thing to watch different keepers in action.

"I reckon, nowadays, every goalkeeper has their own particular style and technique and I just enjoy watching them in action."

Transfer News: Chelsea ready to hijack Alexis Sanchez deal

Transfer News: Chelsea ready to hijack Alexis Sanchez deal

Another twist has been added to the transfer saga involving Arsenal wantaway striker, Alexis Sanchez as it is been reported that Chelsea have entered the race to hijack the Chilean from their Premier League rivals.

Manchester City were initially the firm favourites

to land Sanchez but there was a twist when Manchester United entered into the frail with the offer of more money and adding Henrikh Mkhitaryan as a makeweight to help them to match Arsenal's £35m valuation of Sanchez.

Now another twist has been handed as Chelsea are believed to be also prepared to meet Sanchez's demand for a signing-on fee of up to £20m in addition to footing a potential £10m bill for the striker's agent, Fernando Felicevich, which would value the overall deal at £65m for a 29-year-old who is out of contract at the end of the season.

That figure does not include the reputed £400,000-a-week wages, including bonuses, that would make Sanchez the highest-paid player in the Premier League.

United remain the front-runners but they face competition from Chelsea, who have yet to be deterred by the huge costs involved in trying to sign Sanchez.

Chromecast or Google Home Killing Your Wi-Fi? Here's How to Fix It

Chromecast or Google Home Killing Your Wi-Fi? Here's How to Fix It

Did you recently get a Google Home MaxHome Mini, or some other Chromecastdevice, and now your Wi-Fi isn't working? It could be due to a unique quirk with Chromecast-enabled devices, which send too much data at once, which causes the router to crash.

According to TP-Link, Google's Chromecast devices send MDNS packets to discover and maintain a connection to other devices, such as the Google Home. Normally, these packets are sent in 20-second intervals, but it appears that when one of Google's gadgets wakes from sleep, it sends a massive number of these packets all at once, which overloads the router and causes it to crash.

Currently, it appears that TP-Link routers—the Archer C7, in particular—are the most susceptible to this problem, which was first reported by Android Police. Fortunately, TP-Link has already issued a patch, which can be downloaded here.

Google also told 9to5Google that it is also working on a fix. In the meantime, if you find that your router is crashing, unplug your Google device, and make sure your router's firmware is up to date.

Updating your router's firmware is also important for making sure that it's protected against security holes and other threats. Here's our guide for updating the firmware for Amped, Asus, D-Link, Google, Linksys, Netgear, and TP-Link routers.

Samsung Galaxy X rumored to have been shown secretly at CES 2018

Foldable phone looks to be inching closer to release

The Samsung Galaxy X, one of the world’s first fully-foldable phones, has reportedly been shown off to prospective customers at CES 2018.

According to a report in The Investor, Samsung had prototypes of the foldable screen in a variety of forms and is intending on bringing the device to market in the next 12 months.

“Samsung Display said it has developed a 7.3-inch foldable panel with plans to start production later this year,” an anonymous source reportedly said to The Investor, highlighting how the device will be a larger screen that folds down to the size of a smartphone.

Gaining traction

The meeting is said to have drawn more people than previously, as interest in the foldable display grows.

It’s reported that Samsung had two forms of folding screen on show, but chose an ‘infolding’ device due to durability issues - think an internal screen on a folding phone, rather than the outer shell which would have a bigger ‘stretch’.

The Galaxy X - which is unlikely to be the final name of the phone, especially given the release of the iPhone X - will possibly be shown in 2018, but is more likely to slip into 2019.

It’s also possible that it’ll be a Korean-only launch, in the same way as the Samsung Galaxy Round was as a proving ground for curved screens before coming to wider products like the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

Infiniti’s Q Inspiration is a gorgeous futuristic sedan that should be electric

Infiniti’s Q Inspiration is a gorgeous futuristic sedan that should be electric

Hello, beautiful

Infiniti’s Q Inspiration midsize luxury sedan concept has all the design accents that scream “the future,” but the engine under the hood is rooted in the past.

Nissan’s luxury vehicle division revealed the Q Inspiration Monday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The car is a stunner, with a Tesla-esque windshield-sunroof hybrid, short hood, and swooped, coupe-like roof line. And even with an onboard computer brimming with all of Nissan’s advanced driver assistance capabilities, it still feels like it’s a “driver’s car” rather than anything meant to inspire a glimpse into our automotive future.

“THE WORLD’S FIRST PRODUCTION READY VARIABLE COMPRESSION RATION ENGINE”

Infiniti says the VC-turbo technology is “the world’s first production ready variable compression ration engine,” which means it combines the speed and performance of a gasoline-powered engine with the efficiency and torque of a diesel or hybrid one. The automaker has also included this VC-turbo engine in its QX50, which goes on sale in later this year.

Tech features include a digital dashboard and new ProPilot autonomous driving technologies, such as autonomous multilane highway driving and intersection auto-navigation. Infiniti says both functions will make it to production in the near future.

But this still feels like a big missed opportunity, especially when Infiniti’s parent company Nissan is leaning so heavily on its mission to bring battery-electric power to the masses with its Leaf EV.

And it’s not like Infiniti hasn’t shown us electric concepts in the past. Last summer, the luxury brand revealed the decidedly retro-looking Prototype 9electric racecar with the powertrain of a Nissan Leaf. A 148-horsepower electric motor, with 236 pound-feet of torque, and a 30kWh battery, powers the rear wheels through a single-speed transmission. Aside from that, it just looked fun to drive.

The Q Inspiration certainly also looks like a blast on the road, but don’t expect it to serve as a platform for any future mobility efforts. On the bright side, the fact that this thing isn’t an electric or hybrid car probably increases its chances of eventually getting made.

WE CLIMBED INTO THE NEW MERCEDES-BENZ G-WAGEN

WE CLIMBED INTO THE NEW MERCEDES-BENZ G-WAGEN

Simple, rugged looks hide a beautifully detailed machine

With the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, everything new is made to look old. It’s not that Mercedes went out of its way to make a brand new, $100,000-plus SUV feel 40 years old, rather that they insisted on keeping classic touches that keep the character of the old alive.

As I pored over the new G-Wagen, as it’s known, on Sunday night at the Michigan Theater in Detroit, it was immediately clear that the work paid off to make what was an old car with a patchwork of new tech a more harmonious and unified experience befitting a luxury car. The doors open and close with a solid sound that inspires confidence. The cargo door in back still swings open wide and reveals a flat floor. The G-Wagen’s boxy shape makes the interior airy and upright, giving off another feeling of confidence that you’re above everyone else on the road.

Mercedes also knows how to put on a show. There was fire, smoke, and former host of Celebrity ApprenticeArnold Schwarzenegger. The G-Wagen proved it could tackle all kinds of conditions, even if we were technically indoors and away from the below-freezing temperatures in Detroit.

Unfortunately, the excellent MBUX interface isn’t on the G-Class yet, with its rather intelligent voice assistant. Still, the experience lifted from existing Mercedes cars like the E and S classes is a vast improvement over what the G-Wagen managed before. The interior is also covered in beautiful materials, with high-quality stitched leathers. Even the air vents are solid and nicely finished, being large enough to easily operate them with gloved hands.

Check out our video to see even more of the 2019 G-Class. It’s an impressive new car, and it’s also impressive that Mercedes stuck to the winning formula and brought its off-road icon into the 21st century without changing its character.

GAC says it’s primed to enter the US market by 2019

You probably haven’t heard of GAC, the Chinese automaker with big designs on the US market. At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, GAC is seeking to up its profile in advance of its 2019 US launch with — what else? — an eye-catching, futuristic, mostly irrational electric car concept.

The Enverge certainly attracted a lot of attention here in Detroit with its gull-wing doors, “floating” digital dash-screen, and alleged range of 370 miles on a single charge. That would place it over the Tesla Model 3, which is, of course, a real car and not a concept like this. GAC also unveiled the GA4 midsize sedan that will go on sale in China later this month.

THE HEADLIGHTS SLIDE OUT AND DETACH TO BE USED AS FLOOD LIGHTS

There are a whole bunch of design cues that are sure to appeal to fans of ridiculous concept cars. The headlights slide out and detach to be used as flood lights. (GAC calls it the “G light,” naturally.) The two-door SUV also has virtual reality screens embedded in the side windows. The 71kWh battery can be recharged wirelessly; 10 minutes is enough for 240 miles of range.

The fact that GAC’s booth is right across from GMC’s probably isn’t doing it any favors in terms of name recognition. That said, it wouldn’t be fair to lump GAC with other Chinese companies with electric car concepts like Faraday Future and Byton. For one, GAC is an established automaker with the ability to manufacture hundreds of thousands of automobiles at scale. GAC sold just over 500,000 automobiles in China last year, up 37 percent from 2016. A subsidiary of the Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group, the company is the fifth largest producer of passenger cars among Chinese automakers.

The company says it is negotiating with partner Fiat Chrysler about the possible distribution of vehicles in the US.
