The 2019 VW Jetta is an accessible car with accessible technology

The 2019 VW Jetta is an accessible car with accessible technology

Face it, you’re going to drive one at some point

2019 VW Jetta

 Volkswagen

On first mention, the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta may not sound like it’s worthy of making much of a splash. Yet Volkswagen used the 2018 Detroit Auto Show to launch a new version of the Jetta, its bread-and-butter sedan in the US. While the company promises a whole new range of EVs (some of which are retro-inspired), its compact sedan is still in charge of keeping the lights on for the automaker’s US arm.

Still, it’s tough to get too emotional over the exterior. While the 2019 Jetta certainly has more flair than the deeply plain outgoing model, it retains a conservative profile that is unlikely to offend anyone. There is more chrome and more LED lighting accents on the outside than ever before, although the Jetta still straddles something between mainstream and premium.

The new Jetta finally adopts the MQB architecture that underpins pretty much the rest of VW’s models. That also means the Jetta can now be had with the Digital Cockpit that already showed up on models such as the Atlas, Tiguan, and Golf. Configurable gauges dress up what’s already a much-improved interior and vanquishes the old car’s reputation for cheap interior plastics and outdated tech.

Power for the new Jetta still comes from a 1.4-liter gasoline-powered turbocharged four-cylinder engine, this time making 147 horsepower. Cars equipped with the new 8-speed automatic transmission also get automatic start / stop for the first time, but there’s little that’s revolutionary in the engine department. (There’s no word on the return of the Jetta Hybrid.) At least the 1.4-liter turbo managed around 40 mpg in the old car and should net something similar in the new model.

The 2019 Jetta goes on sale this spring, with a price starting from $18,545, less than the previous base model, VW officials said. To get the tech, though, you’ll likely have to spring for the higher-end SEL and SEL Premium models that are probably going to land in the $25,000 ballpark. Still, that could be enough to satisfy those who want an Audi or BMW, but can’t get there until their next work promotion (or two).

Benue youths, Police in a shoot-out

Benue youths, Police in a shoot-out

Benue state capital, Makurdi, has reportedly been plunged into a state of unease pervades as youths engage security operatives at Wadatta area, a suburb of the capital city.

Punch reports that some youths had gathered in a particular place, with policemen and soldiers suspecting they could cause havoc, hence the decision to engage the youths.

NAIJ.com gathered that some suspected miscreants at Wadata started gathering around 8.00pm on Sunday, January 14, and security operatives were said to have been alerted immediately.

Reasons for their gathering could not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report.

Both Tiv and Hausa youths had caused mayhem on Saturday, January 13, which led to several persons being injured and currently receiving treatment in hospitals in Makurdi.

The youths were said to be on a mission to avenge the death of their kinsmen.

A resident of the area who spoke to Punch correspondent said shootings were still going on as at 9.00pm

Since the attack in some parts of the ancient town, soldiers have been stationed in Wadatta area to quell any possible outbreak of riot

When contacted, the Police public relations officer, Moses Yamu, who confirmed the report, said the command received a report that “some cult members” were gathering around Wadataa and security men were promptly drafted to the area.

“We learnt that some cult members were gathering at Wadatta and we have drafted security men to the area,” he said.

When asked if gunshots were still ongoing at the time of filing this report, Yamu said “there was no cause for alarm.”

NAIJ.com previously reported that the federal government appealed to the media and public commentators to exercise utmost restraint in their coverage of the fallouts of the recent farmers/herders’ clash in Benue.

The minister of information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who made the appeal in a statement in Abuja on Saturday, January 13, cautioned against “incendiary comments, unrestrained use of pictures and footages that offended human sensibilities” in the coverage of the crisis.

An auto parts dealer in the Owode Onirin area of Lagos State, Lukman Ogundele, has died in the custody of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command.

Although the police formation had been reportedly  evasive on the whereabouts of the father of two children, a police charge sheet sighted by our correspondent marked his name ‘late’.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Lukman and his friend, Saheed Abayomi, had been arrested by SARS operatives for facilitating the sale of a stolen Toyota Camry.

It was gathered that the police apprehended Lukman in the midnight of December 29, 2017 and took him into custody in Ikeja, where he was detained alongside Abayomi and two others.

Our correspondent learnt that Abayomi and Lukman’s families searched for them at police stations across the state, until on December 31 when Abayomi’s mother traced him to the SARS office.

It was gathered that Lukman’s wife, Wunmi Ogundele, and relatives consequently visited SARS office on several occasions, but were not allowed to see him.

“Any time we went there, policemen would chase us away and they did not allow us to see his friend, Saheed (Abayomi), so we could ask after him (Lukman). I had travelled with the children for the Yuletide when he was arrested,” Wunmi added.

His cousin, one Isaac, who went to the station on January 6, was reportedly told that the Investigating Police Officer, Inspector Edwin Obam, had taken him out.

After failed attempts to see him, his mother, Yemisi Ogundele, who lives in Taraba State, was said to have travelled down to Lagos.

Yemisi said, “He sold auto parts and iron in Owode Onirin. A man wanted to sell a car. He and Saheed got a buyer for the vehicle and the person sold it to someone else. On December 29, in the night, some SARS men went to his house in Itowolo, Ikorodu, with Saheed, and arrested him.

“Our family members went to the SARS office, but the policemen did not give them any attention. Last Wednesday, I came down to Lagos State and went there. The policemen I met said they did not know anybody by that name.

“I saw Saheed while he was being taken to the Ikeja Magistrate’s Court that day with two others. I asked for my son, but they chased me away. They did not allow me to get close to Saheed.”

The mother explained that Lukman’s brother and she met with an official at the court, who showed them the charge preferred against him.

She said she was shocked when she discovered that her son was charged with robbery along with one Kehinde Hassan.

“His name on the heading of the charge sheet had been cancelled, but in the content, it was written as late Lukman Ogundele. That was when I realised that my son died in the police custody, but they were trying to cover up.

“When my daughter prodded the IPO further, he made a call. After a few minutes, about eight armed policemen came to scare us away,” she added.

Lukman’s uncle, Pastor Bolaji Michael, said a policeman confided in him that Lukman was dead and appealed that the family should take the death in good faith.

He said the family had contacted a lawyer to petition the police and take up the matter.

He said, “Lukman and Saheed were arrested for introducing a buyer to a stolen vehicle. But he was charged with a separate count bordering on robbery. We will be in court on Tuesday (today) to see what happens. We will also get a lawyer to petition the Inspector-General of Police.

“Officially, SARS has not told the family that he is dead, which is wrong. It was a policeman that told us that the boy slumped in custody and died. He said he was not tortured and advised us to let go of the matter. He said he would help us to collect his corpse. He said if we let the case drag on, we might not get his corpse in one year.

“I disagreed with him and said we would take it up. This was a man who had two kids of seven and nine years old and a wife. He must not die just like that.”

Abayomi’s mother, who wanted to be identified as Iya Saheed, said a SARS officer had promised her that Lukman and her son would be released on bail as soon as the prime suspects in the case were arrested.

She said, “The officer promised that Saheed and Lukman would be released once they got one Idowu and Kehinde, the prime suspects, arrested. But after the two were caught, they did not release them.

“I was surprised when I got a call last Tuesday that they would be charged to court. Saheed, Idowu and Kehinde were brought to the Ikeja Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday, but Lukman was not there. The police have postponed their arraignment to Tuesday (today).”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, said Lukman died naturally on January 2, adding that the victim’s relatives were informed about the death through a family member, who is a policeman.

He said, “The boy was arrested for armed robbery with four others. Along the line, he was sick while in the cell and was taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. The doctor treated him and the police took him back.  He was returned to custody.

“The next day, he collapsed and was rushed back to the hospital. On getting to the hospital, he was confirmed dead by a doctor. Other gang members have been arraigned and remanded in prison.”

No land for cattle colonies in our state, Benue leaders tell Buhari

No land for cattle colonies in our state, Benue leaders tell Buhari

Prominent leaders from Benue State have told President Muhammadu Buhari that there is no land to allow for the establishment of cattle colonies as being proposed by the Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh.
They made their position known to the president on Monday after they held a closed door meeting with him in the State House, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Governor Samuel Ortom, who led the delegation and addressed the press after the meeting, said Mr. Ogbeh, “who is a son of the soil has explained that cattle colonies are a combination of several ranches” and is proposing that ten thousand hectares should be provided for that purpose.
“In Benue, we don’t have ten hectares for colonies, other states may have, but we don’t have in Benue State,” he said.
Among those in the delegation are former senate president, David Mark; former governor, George Akume and several others.

Alexis Sanchez transfer deal to be confirm in the next 48 hours - Wenger

Decision on Sanchez in 48 hours says Wenger

(FILES) This file photo taken on December 31, 2017 shows Arsenal’s Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez watches the ball during the English Premier League football match between West Bromwich Albion and Arsenal at The Hawthorns stadium in West Bromwich, central England, on December 31, 2017. Arsene Wenger confirmed he expects Alexis Sanchez’s future to be resolved imminently after the Arsenal forward was left out of his side’s 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth.

Sanchez, who becomes free agent at the end of this season, is a target for Manchester United and Manchester City who came close to signing the Chile international on the final day of the last transfer window.

United have emerged as strong contenders because of their willingness to meet Arsenal’s £35 million ($48 million, 39 million euros) asking price, with the possibility of Henrikh Mkhitaryan being included as part of any deal.

Wenger insists all options remain open but felt unable to select the player for the visit to the Vitality Stadium although he insisted Sanchez was willing to play.

“Alexis would have played,” said the Arsenal manager. “But it’s a difficult period for him. He’s always been committed until now but he could have moved yesterday, today or not.

“It will be decided in the next 48 hours. It was a bit difficult for him because he was on stand-by, a little bit. That’s why I decided not to do it. He did not refuse to play.”

Asked if a deal was imminent, Wenger said: “I don’t master the rhythm of that but it could happen today, tomorrow or not at all. That’s why I didn’t take a decision (to select him)…I didn’t want to travel with him and suddenly he goes somewhere.”

Wenger, who criticised his side’s lack of cutting edge as they squandered a number of chances before allowing Bournemouth to recover from falling behind to Hector Bellerin’s opening goal to win through strikes from Callum Wilson and Jordon Ibe, insisted he would recruit a new forward to replace Sanchez if the forward left.

“Look, if Sanchez goes we need to replace him,” he said. “I say when you look at today, we missed many players in our squad. And you say that they have a weight in the team.

“If players like Sanchez go, we have of course to respond to it. Will he go or not, I don’t know, but at the moment, it’s transfer period and in this kind of periods, you try to use the players who are completely focused on being at the club.”

– ‘Nothing concrete’ on Malcom –
Arsenal have been linked with a £35 million move for Bordeaux forward Malcom but Wenger refused to confirm his interest in the Brazilian.

“No. There is nothing concrete there,” said the manager. And when pressed on whether the 20-year-old is a target, he added: “It’s better I don’t come out on any specific name.”

Bournemouth moved up to 13th place, four points clear of the bottom three on the back of the win, and manager Eddie How praised the contribution of match-winner Ibe who scored his first league goal for the club, 18 months after arriving from Liverpool.

“I’m really pleased for him,” said Howe. “He’s been knocking on the door recently, hit the woodwork, his numbers are very good for him this year and I’m really pleased that’s out of the way for him now and hopefully it can be the first of many.

“I just think it is another thing he can take confidence from. I genuinely believe he can have a major impact at this level. I think he has with his general performances recently but of course you need that feeling that only scoring can give you.

“It’s a unique feeling and I’m so pleased he’s got that today and that he’s won an important two points for us. You can underestimate the importance of this game and that goal how important it is.”

Conte is acting like the victim – Mourinho lashes out at Chelsea boss again

EPL: Conte is acting like the victim – Mourinho lashes out at Chelsea boss again

dailypost.ng

Jan 15, 2018 7:51 AM

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has continued his war of words with his Chelsea counterpart, Antonio Conte, telling him to stop playing the victim.

Conte called Mourinho a “little man” earlier this month, after the United boss brought up his suspension as part of a match-fixing investigation while he was with Juventus.

Mourinho then said he had “contempt” for the Italian on Friday, with Conte claiming he was done with the feud.

Now, Mourinho aimed another jab at the Italian, claiming on Sunday that he didn’t start the bickering and that Conte should stop acting like he’s the victim.

“When I start [feuds] I take the responsibilities of that, and I’ve started [them] many times.

“When I don’t start it’s quite funny for me to see other people on the other side acting like victims when they’re not the victims. But, really, I don’t enjoy. That’s why for me it’s over,” the United boss said.

Conte had cited Mourinho’s past shots at Claudio Ranieri, before the Portuguese wore a shirt with the former Leicester City boss’ name on it when he was sacked.

Mourinho admits that sometimes the feuds are his fault and he never shies away from being the bigger man at such times.

“Yeah, sometimes it’s my fault.

“Sometimes it’s other managers’ fault. In my case, when I think it’s my fault and I should behave in a different way I’m the first one to apologise, like I did with Ranieri when I had the chance.

“That’s when our relations went from bad to good and from good to very good, because I was man enough to apologise,” he added.
